Review:
The movie is depressing in every aspect, they're living in a loop reliving their last memories of the aftereffects of the war. They were VERY unlucky. I got frustrated a bit when they wasted the opportunity to settle in their aunt's residence by acting like picky brats. Somehow they thought an abandoned mine was a good home alternative until Setsuko started eating rocks and dirt for dinner.
I thought survival instincts can make you hardworking and surprisingly good at hunting or crafting, but then movies just tend to exaggerate stuff up. My judgment gets back to the reality that they were just unlucky children who got caught up in a war. They didn't have that much time to grow up and learn stuff about the outside world.
My cold-hearted thoughts aside, this movie made me see another side of the war that I never considered seeing - the losing side's family. To spice up the depression, try watching Hacksaw Ridge before this film. All I can say is that - both sides are just fighting with their all with their own cause, and they both share the feeling of losing their beloved. In the end, people's fate just comes to luck whether you are on the winning or the losing side of the war.
