Turns out, the only thing in the bag the group had risked their lives for was Big John's compass. Everyone, except for J.B, was disappointed at the lack of worth that was found in the bag.
No one had said anything out loud, but they all had planned on how to use whatever treasure they had found. Pope was planning on keeping the money to put down for college or even paying for Popi to get in if he got the scholarship. Kiara was going to give it to an organization in the Outer Banks that was trying to stop further destruction of habitats. Popi was going to buy herself a car and get out of the Banks, with JJ of course.
JJ, on the other hand, had two different plans in his mind. Taking the money and going full kook was the highest on his list. Following close behind that, depending on how much money needed to be split in fifths, was the fact that he was going to take Popi on the best date of her life. That was where he was going to announce his undying love for her and present her a promise ring.
But all those dreams were stuck aside and John B's dream about finding the truth about his father's disappearance was moved to the top of the list.

For the summer, while her brother worked for their dad, Popi took a job babysitting a family in figure eight. She made much better money and didn't have to worry about any of it being taken due to tax. However, this summer, since the hurricane, the family had decided that we're going to postpone their annual trip until their maintenance crew approved the house back to normal.
The family, the Coopers, knew about the young girl's situation and graciously sent her a month's pay of what she would normally rack up. They were also kind enough to send some supplies to the Heywards and help pay for maintenance on generators to help it the shop running.
Popi and Pope were found at the Heywards shop, helping hook up the generator when the two other boys came running in the store. They both looked like they had just witnessed a murder. JJ threw Popi over his shoulder and with a swift nod at Mr. Heyward, ran out to the car. John B rolled his eyes at his friend's antics before telling the other twin about an emergency meeting. They took a detour and picked up Kiara on their way back to the Chateau.

"And then we were right outside like this," JJ was putting on a demonstration for the Pogues. He and John B were retelling the group what had gone down at Lana Grubs' house when they had gone and talked to her. "And all we hear is just, 'Bam! Bam! Bam! Knocking paint off the wall, P! From the inside."
