tails was not happy 

he had built a machine that would project a portal that was supposed to go to anywhere in the world, different dimensions, past, present, future, you name it

but yet nothing had happened 

he tried to go through the portal yet it didn't let him pass

he had spending weeks and weeks on this investigation and it was soon becoming months 

he wouldn't normally call his friends for help with his science/inventions 

but he was truly stuck and needed a different perspective 

so now the figures of Amy rose, sonic and knuckles were in his workshop ready to lend a few thoughts 

"so where does this thing go to?" sonic asked surveying the glowing purple circle 

"it's supposed to let you go anywhere" sighed tails 

"so if you've got the portal working, why doesn't it let you enter?" asked Amy curiously 

"I.don't.know" tails sighed putting his face into his hands in annoyance 

"tails, maybe you should take a break, you're just going to drive yourself crazy" knuckles stated, patting the young fox's shoulder 

"but I just can't give up" tails said more loudly, getting up to the portal in annoyance 

"I've put to much work into this" tails said as he unintentionally picked up a working wrench 

"tails?" Amy asked worriedly 

"I just wish it would just, work" tails shouted as he threw the tool in anger 

but unfortunately it hit the projection machine that immitted the portal 

making it splutter and brightly shine 

"get down!" shouted knuckles

all 4 mobians ran in all directions to avoid what ever could come out of the portal 

a sudden thud could be heard from their hiding places 

and suddenly the spluttering and shining couldn't be heard or seen 

looking from their hiding places 

they saw something that made themselves splutter in surprise 

sitting directly underneath the portal sat a small magenta chameleon with a newly growing yellow horn with a heart shaped chest 

"uh...wha" tails stuttered in disbelief, coming away from his hiding place/workbench 

the small chameleon simply looked at the fox, no hint of any emotion, just staring 

"he kinda looks like..." Amy began as she approached the little chameleon 

"please tell me that's espio" sonic commented, chuckling

"how about instead of staring at the kid we ask him" knuckles said shaking his head at sonic 

walking towards the kid, bending his knees to meet him at eye level 

"hey little guy, what's you're name" he asked 

"espio" the child stated 

"ha, called it" shouted sonic 

"this is incredible, he could be from the past or an alternative dimension..or both" tails squealed in excitement, jumping into the air, pushing Amy and Knuckles to the side 

"ok tell me everything" tails said, sitting directly in front of the child with a notepad and pen 

yet the child said nothing, just stared at the very hyper fox 

"I think you're over whelming him" Amy said pushing tails away putting some distance away from the child

"but this is the first real signs of my studies actually working" whined tails 

"maybe, but you need to think about the other person that's being effected by you're studies" Amy continued patting tail's shoulder and going back to the still motionless chameleon 

"how are you feeling sweetie, I know this is really weird" Amy said sweetly 

"what are feelings ?" espio asked 

this caused confusion to all 4 figures 

"heh...you know, happiness, sadness, anger?" sonic said sheepishly 

but espio just continued to stare at them blankly 

it couldn't even be considered confusion 

"he must be from an emotionless world, even if he had a traumatic experience it wouldn't explain his lack of understanding" tails stated 

but he seemed to be talking to themselves 

the rest of the three were crowding around the child 

Amy seemed to be crying because of the lack of his emotion, scared of what a world with no emotions could be like 

whilst knuckles and sonic seemed to be trying to make the child laugh, this would show happiness, telling jokes, tickling 

but they were un-successful

"tails, the least we can do is send this poor child home back to his family" Amy cried 

"ok, ok, come here little guy" tails said as he knelt down to pick the little espio up

luckily the portal was still active and going to the same place where the little espio had come from 

they went inside the portal with him, holding his hand to make sure he got to the right world and home safely  

as they returned a  two main things happened 

tails jumped for joy that his portal was a success and turned around for a high five 

but was met with emptiness 

sonic, Amy and knuckles had ran straight from the workshop to the chaotix's detective agency

"oh hi guys, what's up" vector asked as he opened the door to the three 

"where's espio?" asked knuckles 

"oh he's in the main room meditating wh-" vector began before the three pushed past him 

"espio!" shouted knuckles as he ran towards his little brother figure 

"knuckles wha-" espio asked, shocked by knuckles's outburst, worried it was another eggman attack 

but that shock only grew as knuckles tackled him to the ground 

"what are you?-" espio began to ask again before he let out a round of laughter from his big brother tackling him 

"STAWP HAHAH PLEAS HA WHY"espio laughed/screamed out, trying to wriggle from knuckles grip 

"ok, clear confusion and happiness, thank you for you're time" knuckles said, giving the ok to sonic and Amy as they left 

leaving 3 very confused chaotix members staring after them 

"what was that about?" charmy asked 

"no..idea.." espio said getting his breath together and finally getting to finish a sentence
