Just as said before thanks to Edward's mediating (and general presence) William and Lucas became friends in just two months an impressive feat considering they didn't even like each other (Lucas was still very suspicious of William, and William didn't like Lucas intruding on his "Edward time")
But after a little bit of Edward's mediating they started talking politely to each other then once they started talking they found out they have a lot in common they both liked sweets, they were both hard workers (William didn't show it often but he did work hard when it mattered), and of course they both had a strong desire to protect Edward.
And so they became friends (and secretly formed an alliance to protect Edward)
