Chapter 5:

Professor Snape is getting everything ready for his next class. It's about five or ten minutes till then when he hears the door open. He looks up to see his student Phoenix entering while wiping away a fallen tear from her cheek.

"Is something wrong, Miss Emberson?" he asked her in his usual tone as she walked towards her seat. Usually, he wouldn't care about his students' emotions, but she's his stop student.

"It's nothing, Professor," she announces in a mumble, sitting down in her seat.

"It couldn't be nothing if you are crying," his deep voice softens a little.

Phoenix starts back at Professor Snape for a couple of moments before sighing, "It's Pansy." Her head lowers.

"What about Miss Parkinson?"

"She seems to be wanting to up one me whether it is my views in life or how I look. I try to get her all of my respect because she is in my house and just ignore it, but she said something that really made me sad."

"Oh? What did she say?"

"She called me a....." Phoenix lets out a few more tears, "she called me a 'thing'," she places her face in her hand to silently cry.

Severus was a little taken back by this. Saying that to her is like saying 'Mudblood' to a non-pureblood. He stands up from his seat to walk over to his top student. "Do you wish for me to talk to her?" he asked softly.

"Professor Snape!" Phoenix's surprised by his offer. "I don't want you to waste your time over nothing," she says, concerned.

"Miss Emberson, you are my top student and I am the Head of your house," Snape begins. "If something's bothering you, you know that you can tell me what has happened."

"Yes, professor," she says, quietly.

"I am going to talk to Miss Parkinson about her unacceptable behavior and if you have sometime after dinner on Friday night, I would like to talk to you over some tea," he offers, "perhaps?"

Phoenix stares at his suggesting look before smirking, "I do like a cup of earl grey tea or green tea."

"Sounds like a plan, Phoenix," he smiles a little. "Do you have your homework done?" he asked in his monotone tone once students began to fill up the room.

"Yes, I do," she answers as she looks through her bookbag. "I also have some other assignments done as well," she says, getting her stuff out.

"I'll take whatever you have done."

Phoenix gives Professor Snape everything she has done so far.

Later on, in the week, Phoenix is walking towards her Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom while reading the Quibbler.

"I can't believe it! I received three weeks of detention because of Emberson!" Pansy complains to her friends from behind Phoenix.

"Karma can be a pain sometimes, Parkinson," Phoenix slyly smirks, continuing to read her magazine and walking.

Headmaster Dumbledore gathers the staff together one day for a monthly meeting on a Sunday - everyone's day off. Everything's going okay even with the mention of Harry Potter's performance in Quidditch practice until the entrance begins to open.

They hear a female struggling as footsteps walk up the stairs. Mrs. Norris appears in the office. Hogwarts's caretaker, Argus Filch, walks into the office holding onto a female student's arm roughly. The student is Phoenix Emberson and she's not in her school uniform. Now, she has on a sleeveless black high neck dress that falls down to her bare feet with a sterling silver chain belt around her waist and hips. She also has a see-through emerald coverup shawl with rose designs. Lastly, an emerald bandana is wrapped around her hair.

"I found this student in the forest," Filch tells them, glaring at the little girl, practically throwing her to the floor.

"Hey, hey, hey! Easy now!" Phoenix yells at the grounds keeper, stumbling over, but stands on her bare feet. "Ow," she mumbles, rubbing her slightly bruised forearm.

"Why were you in the forest, Phoenix?" Headmaster Dumbledore asked the Slytherin girl.

"Because the forest holds a special place in my parents' hearts and the forest is safe," Phoenix answers while keeping her head up high.

"The forest isn't safe-"

"My father is Serpent!" she bursts out in anger, shocking everyone. "You can't separate us from the forest," she's beyond angry.

"The forest is currently unsafe for everyone now," Dumbledore calmly tells her.

"Excuse me, Headmaster," Hagrid speaks up. "I have been noticing the creatures have been healed up and happier now."

"The creatures in the forest?" Dumbledore asked him.

"Not just that, but the creatures around us too," Hagrid mentions with a smile. "Even Fang has been looking forward to playing with Phoenix in the forest."

"Really?" Dumbledore asked the keeper of the keys.

"Magical Creatures are everything to me and my family," Phoenix tells the Headmaster, "and so is Magical Creatures Equality."

The Headmaster can see all of her emotions and pride in her eyes. "You have your father's eyes," he comments, softly.

"That's one of many things people tell me, professor," she sighs. "The forest is safe, all the beautiful place needs is its protector."

"Miss Emberson," McGonagall says sternly, "the forest did have a protector, but he fell in love and moved to another forest to protect."

"And now it's my turn to protect the dark forest and my creatures," Phoenix isn't backing down.

Professor Snape steps in to speak, "Dumbledore, we can't deny her heritage."

"Yes, I know, but for everyone's safety, it's best avoided the forest," Dumbledore sighs. "You are dismissed, Miss Emberson, and twenty points off of Slytherin." She just stares at him, not happy. "We will discuss this subject later."

Phoenix stares at him for a few more moments before turning around to leave.

"She's definitely a combination of both Serpent and Eilidh," Hooch comments.

"We all have our work cut out for us," the Headmaster tells the staff, sighing, placing the side of his head in his hand.
