Diana.
~She looks at her blank features, slowing her breathing to help take everything in.
Her mother was asleep on the hospital bed, all sorts of machines connected to her weak body.
"Do you understand her condition, Diana?" the woman kindly asks.
"Not really" she replies, confused by the whole situation. She thought her mother was perfectly well, but that proved to be wrong as she lays in her bed, completely oblivious to the world around her.
"Your mother is in a very critical condition, dear. Her lungs seem to not be working as well as they have been, so we had to admit her. I very sorry, sweetheart, but it's back. The cancer's back."
At that moment, Diana forgot how to breathe.
She collapsed into the chair that rested beside her, sinking into the uncomfortable frame.
Her mother always reassured her that it wouldn't come back; that the cancer would stay away and she would live a long life.
Her mother was always the optimistic, though. Always sugarcoating the bad things, making sure the people around her didn't get hurt.
Diana's head soon became swarm with questions, most of which she didn't want the answer to.
"How long?" she asked the nurse, who was still standing there.
"We aren't sure, dear, but I'll make sure to tell you as soon as we know."
Diana then stood, taking a step closer to her mother and hugging her quickly before walking out of the room.
She needed air.
Once outside, she began to regret not bringing a jacket, as the harsh winter air whipped against her skin, creating goosebumps along her arms.
Tears soon began to form along the brim of her eyes. She told herself that it was just the wind, that she wasn't actually crying, and that this wasn't actually happening. She tried to tell herself that everything was going to be okay, and her mother is going to be fine.
She knows it's just not the truth.
Collapsing to the paved ground, she brings her knees to her chest and curls into herself, her muffled sobs being the only thing heard in the night.
A sudden heat was created on her back, two hands rubbing her shoulders.
"Are you okay?" his smooth voice asked.
She turned towards him, looking into his honey eyes.
"Oh, it's you again" he chuckled, stretching his hand out before helping her up. His hand touching hers ignited a fire inside her, temporarily making the hair on her arms stand on end.
It's just the wind, she told herself.
"Are you okay?" he repeated, shielding her from the cold. She shook her head before letting him lead her inside, the warmth engulfing her.
"What's your name?" Diana asked, curiosity taking over her.
"My name's Zayn, what's yours?" he replied, his hands rubbing together as they sat in the waiting room warming up.
"Diana" she quietly said. She tightened the coat around her, goosebumps still visible on her skin. Zayn grabbed ahold of her hand, rubbing his cold thumb along her own.
"Like the princess?" Zayn asked, looking at her with his lovely eyes.
"I guess" Diana chuckled, turning in her seat to face him completely, giving him his full attention.
"So, princess, do you want to tell me why you were crying?"
