He was walking around outside before he heard her quiet sobs. He didn't think before draping his jacket over her, rubbing her shoulders and asking her if she's okay. It's common sense, he thought. His father taught him well.
Once he realised it was her, he became especially concerned. Now, sitting in the bland waiting room of the hospital, he asks for her name.
Diana, she replied with.
Zayn took her hand, rubbing his thumb along hers.
"Like the princess?" he asks, looking into her crystal-like eyes. They were so mesmerising, so beautiful.
She giggled as she replied with a simple "I guess" before turning towards him. Their knees touched, sending a rush of heat through his body.
It must be the heat in the room, he thought.
"So, princess, do you want to tell me why you were crying?" he asked, smiling at the nickname he had given her. Her cheeks turn a pale pink as she blushes, glancing up towards the ceiling before sighing deeply.
"My mother relapsed" Diana simply says, tears obviously welling in her eyes. Not wanting her to cry, Zayn draped an arm around her, his other hand still holding hers.
"My father did, too" he softly says, looking down towards their entangled hands.
They both sigh as she relaxes into him, her eyes fluttering closed. He looks up at the ceiling, noticing the flickering light. He looked down again, only to see the girl he met merely minutes ago falling asleep in his arms.
He studies her carefully, as if by looking at her he could wake her. Zayn brings his hand up to her face, lightly brushing her hair away from her fluttering eyes. Butterflies, her thought, her eyes remind him of butterflies.
He then realised that she reminded him of a lot of things, many of which were to do with his father.
Maybe she can help, he thought, realising how tired he was. Maybe we can help each other.
Closing his own eyes, he rests his heavy head on Diana's shoulder, before drifting off himself.
