Lily knew, deep down, that she was different from the rest of her family. She looked on while her brothers and cousins messed around with things like raccoons, which terrified Lily. She just couldn't understand why everyone would jump at the idea to do something dangerous, like walk across a fallen tree over a stream.

She would hesitate, watching all the other older kids walk bravely across, or run, or pretend to fall in. They would all coax her, telling her it would be fine, that they all did it. Roxy would then tell her that she was a baby, a scaredy cat. And Lily would flip her red braids over her shoulder and walk across, although being terrified inside.

No one else enjoyed looking at the flowers, reading in trees, watching the little fish swim by in the stream. They wanted excitement. All except her dear friend Lysander.

Lysander understood her. He understood wanting peace and quiet to think about far away lands, or times long ago. Her Godmother, Luna, was just the same way.  The two could talk for hours about nargles and wrackspurts.  Lysander, Lily, and Luna all belonged to the Race the Knows Joseph, are kindred spirits.  (From Anne of Green Gables.)
