Dexter was an introverted and socially awkward kid who used his imagination to entertain himself and pretend he was a genius scientist. His family would frequently play along with him. His rivalry with Mandark, another introverted child with the same problems as Dexter, is simply a facet of their imaginative role-playing. The laboratory itself was also a figment of his imagination. This also explains why Dexter is the only one in his family that has an accent.
