Chapter 2

Toni's pov:

After lunch I headed to my 5th period which was science. Fangs was talking about some dance but I wasn't paying attention. I was looking at her. I don't know why I was so interested in her, I just was. She was looking at me weirdly like she was trying to control something. I noticed she's very pale and still.

She looked up at me again but immediately turned her attention back to the window. I decided to be bold and walk over to her table and sat next to her. I nervously looked at her. I didn't know what to say, and wasn't going to say anything until she spoke up first.

"Hi I'm Cheryl Blossom. Kevin told me a lot about you"

Her voice was low and a little rapsy but I couldn't help but notice how sexy she was and sounded.

I was too shocked she was talking to me to respond.

"Toni Topaz, correct?"

"Uhm, yes"

I didn't know what else to say. The our teacher started talking about some small in class science competition thing to win a golden union. Cheryl slid the microscope over to me and said,

"You can go first"

I looked through while talking.

"So, 'Forks Washington', what's it like there?"

"Oh, well it's very rainy and cold, quite like here and it's a very boring town"

I just nodded.

"It's prophase" I said after looking through the microscope. She looked at me unsure.

"Mind if I look?" She asked.

"Go for it"

I slid the microscope back over to her and she looked through it.

"Prophase"

"Like I said" I mumbled.

She writes it down on her worksheet then takes a deep breath as if she trying to calm herself before glancing back at the window then to me.

"Looks like it's raining again"

"Yep. I never liked the rain. Or the cold, or the gray, or the turtle necks" I said in a disgusted voice.

Then I saw it. Was that a smile playing on her lips? For the first time seeing her smile I have to say I am not disappointed.

"What?" I laugh slightly.

She just shakes her head then turns back to the microscope, switching out the slides. I look at her. Her perfect cheekbones, lips. She's like a perfect sculpture.

"Anaphase"

I snap out of it as I here what she said.

"May I look"

She slides it back over to me and I look through it.

"Anaphase" I confirm.

"Like I said"

I turn back to her to see a sly smirk playing on her lips. I simply hold out my hand for another slide.

"If you hate the cold and rain then why do you live here?"

"Uh, it's complicated"

"I think I can keep up"

She actually seems interested. I look through the microscope again while I explain.

"Well, my parents are divorced, my mom remarried and lives in California, I live down here with my father"

"Very complex. So you don't like her new husband or what?"

"Phil is fine. Young for her but nice enough"

She just nods.

"Interphase"

hallway after class:

I exit the classroom holding the golden union before I practically run into something, or someone to be exact.

"Hey, why didn't you stay with your mom and stepdad in the first place?"

She waits for my answer, leaning against a locker studying me as if she's trying to decipher me. I'm drawn in by her attention, oddly compelled.

"Alright, Phil's a minor league baseball player so he travels a lot. My mother stayed home with me but it made her unhappy so I decided to move in with my dad for a little and I've been with him for about a year"

She looks more intrigued.

"So now your unhappy?"

"Well no, i- I just"

I couldn't find the words. I turn away embarrassed, vulnerable.

"I'm just trying to figure you out. Your very, hard to read"

I turn back to her. Our eyes meet but now I'm noticing something more about them.

"Did you get contacts?" I asked confused.

"...no"

"Your eyes, they were black before now they're this, golden brown or-"

"It's just the fluorescents" she cuts me off quickly.

She abruptly turns and walks away. I noticed that as she did so, her hands clenched into fist's and she looked udderly irritated. I brushed it off, still very confused, and headed towards my locker.
