Chapter 8

School lawn

Toni stands in the center of the deserted, green lawn. The bell rings and students exit class, rushing past Toni as she stands still, waiting...

Across the lawn, heading to class, Cheryl sees Toni, sees the intensity on her face, causing her to stop.

Toni walks towards her, eyes meeting hers..her look says "we have to talk". Toni continues directly past her, into the dark forest that borders the school.

Cheryl watches her disappear into the trees, then takes a step to follow. Reggie moves in front of her, Veronica grabbing her arm.

"Cheryl don't go" she says sternly.

Betty then takes Veronica's hand off Cheryl's arm.

"She's already gone"

In the forest

"Your impossibly fast. And strong. Your skin is pale white, ice cold. Your eyes change color. And sometimes you speak like...you're from a different time" Toni turns to face her, continuing.

"You never eat food, or drink, or come out into the sunlight. And you said no to the beach trip only after I told you where it was. Because of the treaty"

She steps closer to her.

"How old are you Cheryl?"

"Seventeen" she replies without hesitation.

"And how long have you been seventeen?"

Cheryl sees she can't hide anymore. Honesty is an enormous risk, but she has to take it.

"....a while"

Toni inhales. She knew, but it's still shocking.

"I know what the cold one's are. I know what you are"

"Say it. Out loud. Say it" Cheryl whisper's.

".. vampire"

They seem to hover in momentary stasis. Cheryl utterly exposed, reality utterly rocked.

"Are you afraid?"

"No❤️"
(I had too)

"Then ask me the most basic question: What do we eat?" Cheryl says, angry.

"You won't hurt me. Your different"

"You think you know me?"

Cheryl glares at her. But Toni holds her ground. Suddenly, Cheryl takes her by the hand. Starts walking.

"Where are we going?"

"Up to the mountain. Out of the cloud bank. You need to see what I really am. What I look like in the harsh light of sun"

"No! The sunlight will kill you"

"That's a myth. You need to see the truth"

"Cheryl pulls her but she stumbles.
