Chapter 3

Parking lot
No one's pov:

The rain has stopped, but the parking lot is full of water and patches of black ice.

Shivering, Toni heads to her truck, carrying the onion, carefully navigating the icy puddles. As she reaches her truck, she looks aross the lot where Cheryl is standing by her red Volvo with her siblings about to climb in. Only a moment their eyes meet.. then she looks toward the sound of a high pitched screech, that quickly grows louder..

Toni turns to see a van, skidding on the ice, careening out of control, heading directly for her. Time suddenly fractures, compressing to stillness, then exploding in bursts of speed as the faces of students around, stare in shock, seeing what's coming. The driver's face (Tyler) desperately tries to gain control. Cheryl looks at Toni with a horror expression.

The van is about to hit Toni's truck, with her standing in between, when suddenly, something knocks Toni down, pinning her to the ground. She looks up,

Cheryl is on top of her.

The world around them freezes in this fraction of a second, their proximity is overwhelming, electrifying. Cheryl breaths in her scent, Toni takes in her flawless face.

Abruptly, the world blasts back to speed as several things happen quickly. Toni is unsure of what's going on.

The van smashes into the back of Toni's truck, then spins around, once again careening towards her and Cheryl, when suddenly...

Cheryl's hands are creating a deep dent in the side of the vans body as it shudders to a stop, a foot from Toni. Cheryl literally pushes the van away.

Then silence. A long beat, void of any sound, as Toni looks at Cheryl, trying to absorb what just happened. Cheryl's fear for her is still on her face. She tries to speak but..

The screaming begins, yelling, calls for help. People leap to Tyler's aid, run to Toni and Cheryl. Toni sees the onion on the ground, smashed as she would have been. As everyone sweeps in, Cheryl moves into the b.g. Fangs and Sweet Pea run to Toni.

"Are you okay?! What happened?!"

Amid the chaos, Toni sees Cheryl's siblings looking at Cheryl. But they show no hint of concern for her safety. Instead, they look at her with disapproval.... And fury.

Hospital

The double doors burst open as Charlie runs in, face white with terror as he spots Toni, sitting on a gurney, the E.R. doctor looking into her eyes with a pen light. On the next gurney over, Tyler (van driver) lies with a mild head wound. Charlie rushes up to his daughter.

"Tones are you alright?" He asks, in a very worried voice.

"Yes I'm fine dad, calm down"

"I'm so sorry Toni, I tried to stop I swear!" Tyler says, feeling very guilty.

"It's okay Tyler"

"It sure as hell is not okay" Charlie cuts in.

"Dad it's not his faul-"
