Chapter 7

Waterfall restaurant
Night

Toni and Cheryl sit at the table. A dramatic waterfall shimmers behind them. A waitress places a steaming plate of mesquite roasted salmon in front of Toni then exits.

"Your not eating?" Toni asks, confused.

"I'm on a special diet" Cheryl replies.

"Like South Beach?"

"Not exactly"

Toni looks at her curiously as she takes a bite.

"So how 'bout some answers?"

"Yes, no. To get to the other side, and 1 point 772453851" Cheryl replied with a slight smirk.

"I didn't ask for the square of pi"

"You knew that?"

Ignoring the question, Toni went on.

"How did you know where I was?"

"I didn't"

Toni shakes her head, frustrated, and turns to leave.

"Don't go" Cheryl said, after stopping her sincerely.

Cheryl seems torn between some internal dilemma. Then finally...

"Were you following me?"

"I feel very protective of you"

"So that's a yes?"

"Yes I followed you. I tried to keep my distance..until you needed help" Cheryl sighed.

Toni started to put things together.

"You said before that you heard what those guys were thinking...can you read minds?"

Cheryl shrugs "I'm thinking of getting a nine hundred number"

Toni's still trying to grasp what's going on.

"Alright so you read minds..what am I thinking? Wait- okay now, go"

"I have no idea. I can read every mind in here, except yours"

Cheryl starts pointing at every person saying "work, sex, money, sex, sex, boyfriend.."

She then points to Toni.

"And then nothing, it's actually quite frustrating"

"Well why, What's wrong with me?"

"I tell you I read minds and you think there's something wrong with you?"

Cheryl smiles, charmed by her. But that smile soon fades, that torn look returns. She looks onto the rail, looking out.

"What's wrong?"

"I...don't have the strength to stay away from you anymore"
