She stood quiet and pale at the side of the stage,
And slowly walked on as they called out her name.

She clutched the end of her dress and ducked her head,
But her timid voice carried through the silent hall as she said,

"Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm just a little girl.
I haven't lived long, I've barely been hurt.

But I've seen the world in a much different way,
And there's a million things that I have to say.

"For starters, the boy who sits by me in class
Thinks that I don't see the scars on his arms.

The girl whom I pass in the hall everyday,
I've seen her crying over a cemetery grave.

"The teacher walks in and yells at my friend
So she's learnt to be silent and not to offend.

That boy who always gets caught for trouble
Keeps mum about his life of rubble.

"The man who sits on the pavement by my home
Has cried to me of the violence he's endured.

That old woman who walks with a cat in her hand
Glances down at her ring while I look for her man.

"In reality we don't see how much we each suffer
We're all so caught up and wrapped in our bubble,

But just for a moment if we pause and see,
That our voice is our future then we can be free."

She broke off and scanned the silent crowd,
And clenched her jaw as her tears began to cloud.

"In truth, this is what I tell myself everyday.
My Voice is My Future. That's all I have to say."

As she walked off the stage leaving the stunned crowd behind,
Many a lives were changed for the better that night.
