EDWARD'S strange behavior did nothing but keep Sage away. She wondered if his random spouts of anger or his peculiar comments were a form of self-sabotage, attempting to propel her from his orbit. But it was almost like ... the universe was bringing her to him like a magnet. Just a simple smile, a flash of his honey-gold stare – she was pulled towards him and forgetting whatever stupid thing he said a second prior. They got along in ways she hadn't experienced with someone before, even with Blaire.

And if it was self-sabotage, Edward seemed like he was done fighting against it. Their morning car rides and shared soft grins just proved that. Despite his better judgment, Edward felt the pull towards her too.

Which was why he couldn't allow any feelings to fester, or expand like roots in the soil. And she could never find out his secret. Ever. Sage was going to be a good friend, one he would remember when he eventually moved away from Forks to start a new life, and he was going to do things right by her. He wouldn't screw things up like he had with Bella.

Sage was excited to be able to skip all her classes today for a field trip in Chemistry. Her class, along with two others taught by Mrs. Leman, boarded a few packed buses to a lab all the way in Sappho. She talked with Edward about her weekend and how she met Blaire, and he was completely tuned in as she rambled on and on. Sage never talked a lot, but somehow, that changed around Edward.

Her mind drifted to another place though. As her mouth went dry from the constant words, she couldn't help but think about Edward's reaction to La Push, and Blaire's grandfather's own feelings towards the Cullens. Something there wasn't connecting, and she couldn't help but let it weigh on her mind.

It's a little crowded, Edward's past comment tickled in her head.

They explored the lab with Mrs. Leman and listened to her drone on about the technicians' current experiments, but Sage's mind was still felt foggy and distant. She was even able to drown out Margo Richards' insistent questions. She watched Edward smile from the corner of her eye, and she wasn't sure if he was laughing at Margo or something stupid he was thinking about. Whatever it was, Sage averted her stare and tugged on the collar of her Forks High sweatshirt. The less she had to think about the better.
