Trygve's POV

Vera was running along the forest trails. Her steps were light and fast. Mine were bumbling and awkward as I tried to keep up. She had been training me during our month together.

A horn sounded, and she froze. She became so utterly still in the span of a second that it appeared as if she had never moved at all.

I turned towards the sound of the horn. Dear gods! Had it already been a month?

"My tribe," I told her.

She looked at me. Her hesitation was obvious in her expression and posture. "I'm not sure that I should go to meet them," she said quietly.

"I won't let them hurt you, Vera," I held her hand in my own. She looked away.

"I'm scared, Trygve," she whispered. My jaw dropped in shock. "What if they..." she couldn't finish her sentence.

"I won't let them. I have a decent amount of say within my tribe," I replied. "Plus, you could probably take them all down. I'll stay here until you're ready."

Her head tilted in an incredibly cute way. "We'll go, then," she said slowly.

It took several minutes for us to reach the beach where several boats were waiting.

"What's taking him so long?" Arvid, my older brother, asked.

"Probably drowned," Brandr replied. Solfrid was rolling her eyes at them.

"He's fine. Or did you forget when he saved all of our skins on dragon island?" Solfrid replied.

"I don't like him," Vera said softly.

"Who?" I asked her.

"The short one with red hair. He has arrogance issues and is probably gonna hit on me," she said shortly.

"Probably," I replied with a hint of a smile.

"They can't know my name," she told me stiffly.

I raised my eyebrows. "Why not?"

"Only people I trust know my name," she said bluntly.

"So, Shadow?" She shook her head.

"Only you can call me that."

"How 'bout, Verr?"

"Absolutely not," she said, crossing her arms. "Only for family."

I rolled my eyes to hide my laughter. "Then what?"

She paused for a moment. "Valka," she replied.

"You don't look like a Valka. How about, Valkerie? Val for short?"

"What-" she didn't get to finish.

"Trygve! Why didn't you come out?" Arvid shouted and came rushing towards me.

A second later, he froze as Vera held a knife to his throat, hissing at him.

"Who are you? And what do you want with Trygve?" she growled lowly.

"I should be-" Her snarl deepened.

"Ve-alkerie, this is my older brother, Arvid. Arvid, my friend, Valkerie," she scowled at him. The knife slid back into her sleeve, though.

"V-al, calm down a bit," I told her.

Her eyes darted around the camp. I groaned as I saw everyone draw their weapons.

"Enough!" I shouted at them. Vera didn't even dare to glance at me, preferring to keep her defensive stance.

"Trygve," Hella said. A smile gracing her lips.
