⚠️TW: There is talk about what happened on the top of the wall, but not a lot ⚠️

⚠️TW: talk of blood, so if your squeamish I'm sorry⚠️

Years Ago....

I limped throughout the maze; full of exhaustion, sweat dripped from my body, giving me a shiny look. I had been running for 3 hours straight. My wrist was getting worse but the blood that covered my face was drying, almost crusting over.

My breathing was uneven, I was only able to get small amounts of air each time I took a breath. I clutched my wrist to my chest as I continued staggering my way throughout the maze.

I had only just lost the 10th griever it felt like now, although, it may have been the same one. Playing a game of cat and mouse. However, there was one thing that kept me going, one word I kept repeating...

"Newt......" I rasped every few seconds, I had to get back to him, back to my best friend. Hell, I didn't even know if he was alive. But I had hope.

My eyes had dried of their tears; however, they were still stained on my face. I couldn't cry anymore; I felt like I was going to collapse. I was getting dizzy every 10 steps I would take, so I would look up and struggle to take a breath.

As I looked up, I saw the top of the walls; my mind going back to hours ago, when I stood up there with Newt....

Why would he even think about that? Leaving me? Not telling anyone, leaving without.... What would we have done if we found him? Lifeless. Gone.

Tears sprung to my eyes but as by the time they fell, they were gone. I was too weak to cry, if I did, I wouldn't be able to stop.

I looked around the walls; trying to find anything that looked like a landmark. The sky was light, and I knew the doors would open in a few minutes, I just need to find it.

My eyes then land on a maroon piece of fabric tied to the wall, and I let out a sigh of pure relief. My shirt. I put it there, so I always knew how to find home. I stumbled towards the shirt and gripped onto it, keeping my balance. Although my wrist was screaming in pain, I couldn't make a noise, if I did, I was terrified that a griever would come bounding after me.

I shut my eyes as I got my breath, though, I never fully got it back. I opened them again as looking to my right, and down the hallway that lead to a dead end, but I knew it wasn't a dead end.

As I pushed myself away from the marker, a low, dull 'boom' rang out, throughout the maze. A sort of smile graced my face then quickly disappeared as I heard the scraping of concrete against concrete. I let out a sigh as I saw a small crack begin opening wider.

The doors were opening.

I limped faster than I was before as I saw a crowd of boys waiting at the entrance, waiting for it to fully open. I looked down, to my feet, making sure I won't trip over anything. "Avery!" I looked up when I heard someone yell my name.

"Minho..." I whisper, I was about 100 meters away from the opening, when he came running into me. His arm made its way under my arm to keep me propped up; helping me walk. "Newt?" I said though it was barely audible, looking at the crowd, however I didn't see him. Where is he?
