It was probably not the smartest idea, but Luke reacted without thinking as he sprinted after the stranger.
"Wait!" He called.
Luke may not know much about the world, but one thing he knew for a fact was that Vampires did not have brown eyes.
The figure let out a panicked squeal as they stumbled over their feet. This slowed them down long enough for Luke to catch up and snatch at their cloak, effectively ripping it away as they struggled, then fell onto the dirt road, dropping a sack of dirty carrots in the process.
Luke didn't mean for that to happen and realized that what he had just done could be perceived as an attack.
Quickly he dropped the cloak and raised his hands submissively. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to scare you!"
The woman scooched away quickly, her eyes wide with fright as her auburn hair stood widely from her head. Her skin was slightly tanned, and he couldn't help but notice how blunt her teeth were.
"P-p-lease don't kill me." She stuttered. "I'll do any-th-thing. Just please don't h-hurt me!"
The woman's body shook violently, and Luke felt awful for frightening her so much. This was his first time thinking someone could perceive him as a threat, which was laughable in his opinion since he'd been raised to be the bottom of the food chain.
Then he realized why she was so terrified. He looked like a Vampire.
In an attempt to calm her, he kneeled down and smiled disarmingly. "It's okay, don't worry. I'm not going to hurt you. Look," He reached into his mouth and removed one of the porcelain fangs, then held it up so she could see. "I'm human."
The woman's chest heaved as she stared, disbelieving. Yet after a moment, she gathered her senses and shot to her feet while snatching up the carrots.
"What the fuck is wrong with you!?" She snapped, catching Luke off guard with her abrupt attitude. "I thought I was dead!"
"Sorry?" Luke likewise stood, hands still raised. "I just wanted to talk to you, but you didn't look willing to listen."
She huffed, then stormed up and grabbed her cloak. "Maybe you should have opened with 'I won't hurt you' instead of running after me like a blood starved Vampire?"
"I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking. I just...I've never seen another human before." Luke lowered his hands and reapplied his fang.
The woman watched with interest. "Where did you get those?"
"What? The fangs? My Master had them made for me."
"And your eyes?"
"Contacts."
"...So...That works? They don't suspect you when you're among them?" She asked skeptically.
"No. At least, I don't think they do. Though the peppermint oil helps. My Master says they can smell our blood otherwise."
"And this Master of yours...Is he human too?"
"No, he's a Vampire." Luke admitted.
She seemed baffled by that answer. "Does he feed from you then? In exchange for protecting you?"
"Um...Kind of? I mean, he draws blood but I've never seen him drink any of it before. But he's kept me safe otherwise."
At that, her expression became bored. "Go figure I'd meet a loony." She then turned and began strutting away, stopping briefly to readjust her cloak. "If you're associated with them, then leave me alone."
