Never enough

They toured North America for all of August doing a show every other night. Niall watched his bandmates struggle and there was nothing he could do about it. Louis had gone off the rails completely and Harry was miserable. Liam had finally cracked under pressure and he was drinking heavily. He tried to be there for them all, he really did, but there wasn't much he could do.

He made sure to put Liam in bed and he always lent Harry a shoulder to cry on. There wasn't much he could do for Louis tho.

He spent most of his time alone or hanging out with their background band, trying to avoid the drama. He found himself alone in his hotel room with his guitar and that resulted in a new song. He played it for the guys one afternoon in rehearsals.

"It's groovy! I love it!" Liam shouted and started to sing the melody with "do a's."  

"That would actually be cool." Niall grinned.

He sang the song again and Harry and Louis joined in on the chorus while Liam sang his do as's in the background. 

When they had finished the song Niall smiled happily. It was almost like the old days.
"Hey, we should all hang out tonight. Like, eat pizza and watch a movie or something. Yeah?"

"Sure." Harry immediately agreed.

"Louis and I were planning to go out to a club actually." Liam said and he saw Niall's face drop into a disappointed look and he glanced over at Louis. "But we can do that some other time, right Louis?"

"Yeah, pizza and movie sound great." Louis answered, sounding a little stressed out.

Niall decided to ignore their hesitation and grinned.
"Great! My room in an hour? I'll order the pizza."

They met up an hour later. If Niall had thought that they would have a normal movie night like before he was wrong. Louis was clearly high and Liam had brought beer. At least they ate pizza and watched a movie and they even shared a few laughs. Altogether it was a good night but it wasn't like before and Niall feared that they would never find their way back to that. He wondered where they had been if Zayn hadn't left?

He didn't blame him at all, but he slowly realized what his role in the band had been. Modest would have still gone through with the whole baby thing but Zayn had been the one Louis could talk to, besides Harry. Maybe he hadn't tried to cope like this? Or maybe he had just dragged Zayn down with him. Probably. Zayn had been so fragile before he finally got out and Niall was glad that he did.

He hoped with all his heart that he was doing better. They had read in the papers that he and Perrie had ended their engagement and with that their relationship. He had sent him a text to express that he was sad to hear about the breakup and Zayn had replied with a simple "Thanks."

Zayn had been there for Liam too in a way that they couldn't. Zayn just got him and he had supported Liam from day one when Liam had been given the role of the responsible one in the band. They used to joke and call him Daddy direction, at least until Louis informed them what daddy could mean as well. Liam had laughed his ass off and asked them to never call him Daddy direction again.

Zayn's departure had been the absolute best for him, but devastating for the band. Niall wondered if they would find their way back?
