"Who hurt you?"

"My own expectations."

...

Hadrian looked up at the night.

The bright moon was a perfect round acting as a dominant monument in the sky. It shone down, fixed and objectifying. Hadrian suddenly felt spotlighted. It was a strange feeling, one that everyone on earth, had at some point experienced.

It was, as if, some sort of otherworldly force was pulling the world together. It made it seem so purposeful, so intended, that you couldn't help but believe that everything happened for a reason.

The feeling was all too suffocating.

A torrent of emotions flooded through Hadrian's body, the hurricane attacking his limbs causing them to tremble. He fell to his knees, his arms hanging loosely by his sides.

Hadrian's breathing became more rapid, more shallow. He blamed his heart, which was hammering inside of his chest. Hadrian placed his hand against it as if to calm it. There was a tightness, as if someone had reached in and squeezed it, wanting it to burst - the constriction made his mind blur.

A deluge of ice water encircled every limb, the cold crept higher until it got to his mouth and nose. The flooding had seized all oxygen triggering a choking breath. He couldn't breathe. Hadrian managed a tight wheezing gasp. His ribs felt like they were bound by iron, the restricting metal, straining his lungs refusing to let them inflate.

Hadrian's mind was a carousel of fears spinning out of control, each one pushing him into the blackness. The devastation was absolute - thick waves of raw, gruelling sorrow.

A lone tear rolled onto his cheek.

Hadrian's time in the basement seemed like a lifetime ago, and yet it was all encompassing. He couldn't seem to let it go. It didn't matter how much he pushed it down. It could be hidden in the deep depths of his mind, but that didn't matter, it would always appear. It would always be there, haunting him, tormenting him.

Hadrian eventually recovered from his injuries in the basement. The couple of hours of unconsciousness had allowed Hadrian time to heal. The jagged whitened scars marking his body would be a permanent reminder of what had happened there. Another tear slid down Hadrian's cheek when remembering what had followed.

....

Never feeling so alive, Hadrian rushed out of the basement. A beaming smile ignited his young features. Hadrian searched frantically for his parents, eager to show them that he was okay, that he was alive. In that moment, he thought he had survived the worst, he thought it couldn't possibly get any more painful.

For a second time, he was wrong.

Hadrian's search for his parents came to an abrupt end. Laughter rung through the manor. The small boy rushed to the kitchen door, crouching next to it. He pressed his hands gently against the wood, leaning closer to look through the keyhole. Lily stood in the centre of the kitchen, holding Daniel in her arms. A large smile ignited her features, causing her eyes to sparkle and her skin to shine.

Lily Potter chuckled.

Lifting her arms, she raised Daniel in the air, twisting and twirling. James stood off to the side, leaning up against the counter, his arms folded. He couldn't help but smile brightly while watching his wife and child.
