"Just get outta here Charlie!" I screamed at my older brother who, like usual, was annoying the crap out of me.

"Jeez Vanessa, take a chill pill," he said, and backed out of my room. I sighed and flopped back on my bed, staring at the ceiling. I heard taps on my window, sounding like pebbles being tossed at it. I walked over and shoved it up, narrowly dodging a larger rock.

"Van? You there?" a boy called from down on my front yard.

"Chris? What do you want?" I shouted.

"You wanna go to the tree house for the day?" he asked, motioning for me to come outside.

"Sure! I'll be right down!" I called back, grabbing my shoes and hopping down the steps. I walked out the door, and saw Chris waiting for me.

"So, how ya been Christopher?" I asked, slinging my arm around his neck.

"Pretty good, besides my old man being on a mean streak the last week or so," he said, chuckling, ducking out from under my arm.

"Yeah, same here, Charlie's been such an ass lately," I said, kicking along a rock.

We soon reached the tree house, this old thing we'd found when we were around 7, and piled inside.

"Oh, hey Teddy," I said, seeing him in a corner reading one of the few magazines we had.

"Hey Van, Chris. Wanna play some cards?" Teddy asked, pulling a deck off the shelf.

"Sure," I said, and sat around the small makeshift table we had. We must've only been playing 20 minutes before our secret knock sounded from under.

"Hey Gordie," Chris said, helping him inside.

"Hey guys," Gordie said, and handed me a new magazine he'd just gotten.

"Wow! Thanks Gordo!" I exclaimed, and handed him my cards to take my place.

A short while later a few thumps sounded.

"That's not the secret knock!" Teddy shouted.

"I forget the secret knock! Lemme in!" someone, who we all knew who, called.

"Vern," we all groaned in unison.

"Oh man, have I got something epic to tell you guys. This is so boss, I ran all the way from home," Vern said excitedly.

"I RAN ALL THE WAY HOME, JUST TO SAY IM SORRY," the boys burst out, making Vern upset.

"C'mon, this is important guys!" he whined.

"Spit it out already then!" I said, flipping through the magazine.

"You guys wanna go see a dead body?" Vern said quietly.

We all stopped what we were doing and were as quiet as ever.
