Little hands punching me in the ribcage woke me up from a great dream. I groaned and rolled over to face whichever Croissant it was this time.

"Who dares disturb me from my slumber?" I groaned.

Small sniffles met my ears and I opened my eyes to see Tamara on the verge of tears.

"I think she had a nightmare," Laf muttered from beside me.

My heart broke a little at her sad little face and I gently reached up to dry her tears.

"What was the nightmare about, ma petite?" he asked softly.

She sniffled again and latched onto me and Laf. "I had a dream that you and Papa were taken again!"

I kissed her on the forehead and brushed a stray curl out of her face. "Don't worry Tamara. Papa and I took care of it. Nobody's ever going to split us up again."

Laf pat her on the head and she turned around and buried her face in his chest. We exchanged a glance and rolled over to go back to sleep. I knew Laf would keep the rest of her nightmares away.

I swear to you it was not ten minutes later when another one of my devil spawns woke me up again.

This time it was Elise. She was poking my face and ended up hitting me in the eye.

"What?!" I hissed.

She flinched and I sighed. "Sorry baby. You just startled me. What's wrong?"

She pitifully blinked at me. "I can't sleep."

I sighed again and forced a tired smile on my face. "You want warm milk? A snack? A story?"

"A story!" Her face lit up in excitement.

I got up in a sitting position and pulled her up into my lap, careful not to wake up Lafayette or Tamara.

"Once upon a time, there was-"

She cut me off with a pout. "I want Uncle John to tell the story."

I was offended. "Uncle John? What's so special about Uncle John?"

"He tells the best stories!"

A patient smile graced my lips. "Then why didn't you ask Uncle John instead of coming to me?"

She pouted even more. "He wouldn't wake up."

I groaned louder and slipped out of bed with Elise in my arms. We made our way to John's room and I threw open the door. Unfortunately for him, that didn't wake him up. So, I walked over to the bed and dropped Elise on his ribcage.

That did it.

She giggled as John coughed and tried to get his breath back.

"Wh-what's going on?!" he wheezed.

I pat his head and gave a wry smirk. "The small one can't sleep and wanted you to tell her a bedtime story. Don't fail her John. You're her favorite Uncle."

A gleam of pride made its way into John's gaze as he bounced Elise on his lap. "Favorite Uncle you say? Well, how about I tell you about the Cave of Two Lovers?"

"Yes! Yes! Tell me! Tell me!"

I smiled to myself and walked out of the room. I might as well check on Georges while I'm up. Carefully, I stepped down the hall to his room and slowly cracked open the door. Surprise surprise. He was awake and reading a book by candlelight.

A soft smile crossed my face. "Georges my darling, why are you awake?"

He jumped and gave me a nervous grin. "Sorry mama. Philip let me borrow his poetry book and I let him borrow my book on French fairytales and I wanted to give this book back tomorrow and I can't stop reading it because it's so good and please don't be mad!"
