School went well the next day and I noticed that Sam had finally made it back. I didn't see much of Eli because he was too busy hanging out with his friends and I mostly just kept to myself until the final bell rang and I could go over to the hospital to check up on Miguel's progress.
When I got there, I looked around for Carmen or Miguel's grandmother in the waiting room but couldn't find them anywhere. I followed my regular route to his room and when I walked in discovered Carmen showcasing his various gifts. "And this ones from Demetri..." she turned and smiled at me and my heart skipped a beat when I saw Miguel flinch slightly. It looked like he was trying to turn so that he could see me. I rushed inside, tossing my bag and jacket onto the chair and leant over his bed so that I could get a better look at him.
"Miguel! Your awake!" I cried, shocked at how far he'd come since the night before. "Wow! That's great!" I smiled excitedly at him and he smiled wearily back, "Oh yeah, your probably tired." I crossed over to Carmen's side and allowed her to finished showcasing his gifts before I began again.
"I'm sorry, I didn't get you anything, I've been busy and well, stuff costs money. I've been visiting though." I mumbled, smiling at him in my rush to say everything in one go.
"She's been here everyday." Carmen chimed, smiling back at me supportively.
"Yeah, but I'm glad your awake! This is...this is great!" He chuckled slightly then his smiled faltered.
"Wh..." Carmen jumped to her feet, having settled into a chair so that I could speak to Miguel.
"What is it Miggy? Water? You want some water?" She stared at him hopefully and he managed a small shake of the head.
"Wh....where's Sensei?" He asked and I looked at Carmen expectantly. I would've though that he would have visited too but I hadn't seen him. The look on her face told me everything and I gathered my things, "Well, I'm glad your awake, I'll come back tomorrow though, give you some time to rest." I smiled and left, hurrying out of the ward and then the hospital altogether.
"So what was it you were saying about a hamster?" I asked as I looked up from my homework, frowning at Eli who was sitting opposite me with his arms folded on the table.
"I was saying that there was one at the dojo today." I nodded, scribbling down the answer to a question before responding.
"And? Why was it at the dojo?"
"Well, Sensei Kreese, he bought it in. He told us to name it," he held a hand out horizontally, "Bert named it Clarence, I wanted to name it Hawk Junior personally but Sensei liked Clarence."
I nodded again, drawing a line across something I'd written previously and rewriting it, "So it's like the dojo pet?"
"Not exactly, more like food for the dojo pet." I stopped working and looked up at Hawk, he seemed to be relishing in the story, a grin spread across his face.
"Food for the dojo pet?"
"Sensei Kreese got a snake."
"Wait, wait, slow down. You fed a live hamster to a snake? At your karate lesson where your supposed to...learn karate."
"Yeah," he nodded at me like it made perfect sense.
"You do realise that that's morally wrong right?" He shrugged, staring at me as I shook my head and continued with my homework.
"When are you gonna be done with that?" He asked, gesturing to my paper and I shrugged.
"No idea, why, you got something in mind?" He smirked at me roguishly and I shook my head again yet this time I was smiling, "It's gonna take me a lot longer now..."
