The Uncommitted Black Woman

Harmony VIII

I awkwardly smiled while I handed out glasses of chardonnay. This wasn't how I wanted to spend my Saturday evening, but this was better than staying in the house and doing nothing since all of my friends were having family night. It sucked being the last single friend, and I was also the friend without any children. I admit that I felt lonely, but I still wasn't ready to commit just yet.

A couple approached me and I couldn't help but sigh and feel envious. They were adorable and just by the way he looked at her, I could tell that he was madly in love with her. They were probably high school sweethearts or something, but who cares. This was the last time that I was doing any favors for anyone.

Darnell told me that she was inviting me to her party to have a good time, not to be her worker for the night. After I poured their drinks, I left my station and headed to the backyard. There were people everywhere but I just wanted to relax by the pool. Now it was August and everyone was enjoying their last moments of summer. I just couldn't believe how fast time was going by.

I was feeling tempted to leave this party, so I could head home and go to sleep. My life was so dry now that I felt lame. All I did was go to work, work out, then go home. I was cutting back on drinking and hooking up so I could focus on myself, but now I just felt lonely and bored.

There were only a few people in the backyard so I dipped my legs in the water and leaned back so I could look up at the stars. Today I wore a gray romper that cut off at my shoulders, and I paired that with a pair of black gladiator sandals. I wanted to keep my hair simple, so I wore my curly hair up in a pineapple and I kept my makeup light. I was a tomboy growing up, so I didn't feel the need to overdress or do something over the top with my appearance.

After relaxing for a bit, I decided to head back inside and finish serving drinks so I could head home. I dried my legs off, then put back on my sandals. When I finally returned inside, I saw Darnell dancing with her husband and the guests. At this moment, I couldn't help but feel left out. Everyone was smiling and embracing the moment and I had no one. After awkwardly standing around for a few minutes, I decided to just head home. I quickly retrieved my belongings then I headed out through the backyard so I wouldn't be seen.

For some reason, I didn't want to go back home to an empty home so I called one of my friends to hangout out. After a few rings, he eagerly answered the phone. Over the past few weeks, Davion and I have been hanging out and getting to know each other more. For right now, our relationship was strictly platonic and we were enjoying each other's company. He moved back to the city a couple of weeks ago, but he had a busy schedule since he was a pilot.

"Hey you, I just left a work party. Are you free right now?" I curiously asked while heading to my car.

"You're in luck, I have this weekend off so I can hang out for a few. I'm surprised that you're calling me at booty call hours."

"Whatever. Meet me at our spot." I replied before hanging up.

I smiled while I drove to the lakefront, we would occasionally meet here when we both couldn't sleep. I missed coming down here at night and having picnics with my friends. I was happy for them, but I missed hanging out with them. It sucked that things had to change, but seeing them grow and be happy was a blessing.

Once I arrived, I parked and got a spare blanket out of my trunk. I didn't eat at the party so I was hoping that Davion brought some snacks with him as he did in the past. Not a lot of people came out here at night so we had this area to ourselves. After finding a spot, I laid the blanket down and got comfortable. I looked up at the bright moon as it shined down on me. I could hear the waves crashing against the concrete wall, and the smell of flowers and wet grass filled my nostrils. I loved summer so I was sad that it was coming to an end so quickly.
