First Year~Chapter One

(Y/N)'s POV

'(Y/N), look what just came!' Dad's voice rang through the hall.

Already having a faint idea of what it could be, I hurried out of my room and downstairs. Stepping into the kitchen, I caught a glimpse of a screech owl leaving through the open window, which meant it had just dropped off a letter. Most of our mail was from the Ministry (Dad's an Auror), however the envelope on the kitchen table looked different than usual.

'Take it,' Dad persisted with a small smile.

I picked it up and stared at it. The envelope was thick and heavy, made of yellowish parchment, and the address was written in emerald-green ink. Turning it over, my hands trembling from excitement, I saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger, and a snake surrounding a large letter H. I pulled out the letter and read:

HOGWARTS SCHOOL of WITCHCRAFT and WIZARDRY

Headmaster: ALBUS DUMBELDORE (Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf. Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. of Wizards)

Dear Miss (L/N),

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.

Term begins on September 1. We await your owl by no later than July 31.

'I'm really going?' I asked, as I felt myself grinning.

'Of course you're going, it's the best school in the world,' Dad laughed. 'You're mother and I loved it there.'

My mother was (M/N) (L/N). She died when I was only one, murdered by You-Know-Who. Dad always told me to call him by his title, Lord Voldemort. 'Fear of the name increases fear of the thing itself, and we won't give him that satisfaction,' was what he would say. He never told me why she was killed, though. Maybe he thought that the information would scare me.

'We'll have to go to Diagon Alley to buy all your stuff. Check the other piece of paper, it should be a list of everything you need.'

I unfolded a second piece of paper and read:

HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY

Uniform
First-year students will require:
1. Three sets of plain work robes (black)
2. One plain pointed hat (black) for day wear
3. One pair of protective gloves (dragon hide or similar)
4. One winter cloak (black, silver fastenings)
Please note that all pupils' clothes should carry name tags
