if this was the cost of freedom,
was it really worth it?

THE SUN RAYS were hotter than ever as it touched irene's face. the clear blue sky enveloped her vision as she stared at a few birds that flew by. it had been five years since the fall of wall maria.
"you are now officially members of the training unit 104. unfortunately for you, i, keith shadis, will be in charge," a fairly bald tall man with sunken eyes barked. his eyes surveyed the large group of soldiers in front of him, "all of you are now merely livestock, waiting to be eaten by the titans. you're even worse than livestock. for the next three years, i'll train you useless shits! i'll teach you how to fight the titans. when you face a titan in three years will you just be food? or will you become glorious to protect the walls? or a mighty champion of mankind who will destroy the titans? the choice lies in your hands."
irene stared at the bald man who marched his way through the front of the lines, interrogating the new recruits. he stopped directly at the person who was in front of irene. his long blonde hair seemed awfully familiar to the girl. irene noticed the beads of sweat that trailed down his partially visible neck and how his knees were shaking.
"hey kid, who the hell are you?" shadis's voice asked in a loud demanding tone.
"i'm armin arlert from shinganshina, sir." he introduced himself with a loud yet wavering voice.
"is that so? that's a name fit for a retard. your parents named you that?" shadis asked leaning his head closer to the boy.
"it was my grandfather, sir." armin gulped, his eyes staring at the chest of the bald man.
"arlert, why are you here?"
"to contribute to humanity's victor sir!" armin replied, louder than ever with sincerity.
"how very admirable. you would make a good first-rate titan feed," shadis's eyes never left the boy who frantically looked at everywhere asides from him. the older man grabbed his head, making him turn his body around. the second armin and irene made eye contact, their eyes widened at the same time.
irene's red orbs stared at armin's blue ones before her view was cut off by the commander. he leaned down to the girl, "and who the hell are you?"
"i'm irene fujiwara. from wall sina," irene's voice answered. she stared into shadis's own eyes.
"wall sina? so you've decided to get out of your comfort zone and decide to join the military?" shadis continued interrogating.
before the female could reply he shot back, "this isn't something you should do in your free time little girl. tell me, what was the reason you joined?"
