56. "Mummy, I miss daddy"

___________________________________________________________

Y/N Verstappen was very much used to her husband Max not being at home. She followed him as often as she could, but since having had kids she mostly stayed home. They had kids at a very early point in their relationship. It wasn't necessarily planned but they were happy how the situation turned out. Their first child, Evy was a witty eight year old with blonde curly hair and a personality almost identical as Max's. Shortly after Evy the couple was blessed with twins: two boys. Luca was the older one, his most important five minutes, as he liked to remind his younger whenever he could. Leon, on the other hand didn't need the reminder, he knew very well what he was capable of and tried to beat his brother in everything. You could say, their coympetitveness was hereditary. Both boys took an interest in karting, which made Max very proud. He had always hoped for a continuation of the Verstappen name in Karting and maybe even Formula One. Evy, on the other hand was so annoyed hearing the topic of motorsports constantly around the house, that she made it her task, to find something her father would be equally proud of.

During the Formula One Season, the family as a whole only travelled to a few races. Monaco, as it was just on their door step. Zandvoort was often linked to a little getaway to see your family. And the one race you would always attend, but without your children was Silverstone. You had met Max here when joining his PR team. You loved your job, even though you hadn't worked since Evy. Being a mum was your only priority and you loved every single second of it. Finances were never a problem and as long as the kids still needed some kind of constant attention you didn't mind not working.

It was shortly before the pre-season testing and Max had left the previous night to fly out to Melbourne. It was a big disaster, Evy had been throwing a tantrum and the boys were fighting about who was the last to say goodbye. Max, being the amazing dad he was, managed to calm Evy down and broke up the fight between the boys by hugging them at the same time. "(Y/N), what have we done here?", he laughed while engulfing you in a tight hug. You chuckled as you cuddled closer to him. "They'll be fine. Give them twenty minutes and they start a new fight. Nothing changes here". Max grinned and kissed your head. "ik hou van je", he said "ik zou niet willen dat er iets verandert. Het is perfect zoals het is". The two of you shared a short but intimate kiss before he kissed his kids once again and left for the airport.

The next day, the boys continued bickering while playing football. Evy, sat at the kitchen table doing some drawing. She normally was a carefree and happy child, but the first days after Max had left, she tended to be a little quieter and reserved. You began cooking her favourite meal but kept looking over to her. She was unusually silent for the circumstances. "Mummy, I miss Daddy!", she said quietly while fidgeting with her hands. A habit she had picked up from her father. "Oh Eves", you hugged her tightly. "I miss him too, but he will be back before you know it. We can call him if you want?". She nodded "I would like that". You kissed her temple before grabbing your phone from the living room. She missed Max a lot when he wasn't home. Often feeling like he preferred her brothers over her just because she wasn't interested in doing motorsports.

When you came back into the kitchen, she sat eagerly on her chair. You dialled his number hoping he would pick up. "Babe? What's going on? Everything okay? Oh my god! Did something happen?", Max answered anxiously. You laughed "No, don't worry. Nothing happened here besides the usual but I have someone who needs a few minutes with you". "Give her the phone, Schatje". You gave her the phone and continued cooking.

"Daddy, when are you coming back? I miss you so much", she exclaimed sadly. You could hear Max sighing "I miss you too, Eves. I have to stay here for a little longer, I'm sorry. But I promise I come home as soon as I can". - "Why can't you just stay with us?". You turned slightly to watch your oldest. This conversation could go two ways and none were particularly pleasant. Either she would get hurt or Max. "You know why, babygirl. I will be home soon, I promise". She sniffled as you put an arm around her. You hated seeing her like this, but you also were very understandable of Max's expectations and dreams as he was still so young. She gave you the phone and snuggled into your side. "Its me, babe", you said into the phone. "I really want to come home. I hate knowing she is feeling so bad", he exclaimed. "Can you arrange it? Or are you too busy?" - "We just had a ton of meetings. I'm sure they can manage without me. I really want to be at home with the four of you". You let out a breath you didn't know you were holding. "Okay, but don't rush it. Finish what you have to finish. I don't want any bad blood. We'll manage a day or two without you". Max ended the call with the promise he would finish quickly but without a rush.

You dried Evy's tears and gave her a cookie, hoping she would refrain from having a tantrum or from crying. By dinner time, she was excitingly talking to her brothers about all the plans they had for the upcoming holidays. All three of them turned towards the door when they heard a key turn. "Papa?", they emerged from their seats and rushed to the door. Max buried them all in a tight hug, kissing each head. "I missed you all so much". The kids were so exited, they never left his side until he put them into bed individually with the promise he'd still be here in the morning. After finishing your own night routine and kissing the kids goodnight you cuddled into his side. "I am very happy, you are home", you said while drawing circles onto his chest.

"Me too!", he smiled "and I'll stay here for as long as I want. I quit this morning. Christian and I were talking about it before the start of the season, but decided to just look what was coming ahead. But after you called yesterday, I realised, that my place is here. With you and with the kids"
