Sam closed the house's door with a final goodbye to Caleb and Aaron, the baby was teething on a piece of cake perched on her friend's lap. She headed for the north wall of the city, her bag slung over her shoulder. When Sam woke up this morning, she had seen the beautiful sky that the first light of the day was already offering. So naturally she grabbed her things, a small notebook, a small palette and some brushes and her knife. She never took too much with her when she went out of the city alone, although she had never had too much trouble, she preferred to be careful and only took light and quick to pack.
She arrived near the wall and was about to climb it, ready to do it quickly while managing not to get caught, knowing that it was not really the most civilized way to leave the city. She was leaning on the first hold when she heard her name called behind her.
"Hey early bird!" Sam said smiling as she turned around and found Maggie. "How was the first night?" she asked.
"I haven't seen pillows in forever it seemed like heaven" Maggie laughed visibly more relaxed than the day before. "Most of the the others are still sleeping, Deanna told me she was getting up early, she wanted to see me again this morning. Where are you going?" finished Maggie with a surprised look on her face discovering Sam with a bag across her back and ready to sneak out.
"Nothing special, I'm just going to go see the sunrise over the little hill there. There's a nice view, you should come see it's worth it. If it's too crowded outside I'd rather go through the official door but I didn't want to lose the colors." replied Sam pointing to the rosy sky. "I'm not running away," she laughed.
"Maybe I'll come and look then. Hurry up you'll miss the best part!" Maggie urged Sam with a hand gesture, smiling.
"I'll see you around ! Tell Deanna I said "Hi"", Sam added as she began to climb under Maggie's watchful eye. Sam gave her a thumbs up when she reached the top of the wall indicating that everything was fine, Maggie waved at her heading to Deanna's house.
Sitting on the grass, Sam watched the sun grow less and less shy. On her notebook she took in the landscape she had seen so many times before but admired the new colors and the first shadows of the morning, all the things that made it unique each time she came to the top.
The area of the city on this side was the quietest, which usually avoided the presence of the dead. They were there in the distance, she could distinguish some who were moving forward, all lost in the plains and wandering aimlessly for eternity. The silence was complete, their grunts could not be heard at this distance, almost making one forget their sinister nature.
The sun was now higher when Sam quickly put her hand to her knife as she heard footsteps behind her, Sam relaxed at the sight of Maggie who reaching the top stood her hands on her hips admiring her surroundings. She then came to sit beside Sam.
