The familiar sound of a spoon and the smell of coffee greeted Sam as she descended the stairs. A glance at the clock told her that it was only 5:00 a.m., not a unusual time for her, but for Eric it was different.
Her friend was sitting, with his head resting on his palm and his eyes fixed on an invisible point, not even noticing her pouring herself a cup of the burning liquid.
"Hey," Sam called softly as she walked behind him to sit at the table. Eric came to his senses and directed tired eyes at her.
Aaron and Daryl had been gone for almost a week now and Eric's lack of sleep was becoming worrisome. This was the first time they hadn't gone on a recruiting trip together, and it hadn't been long between their return and Aaron's new departure.
"Good morning," his friend's sleepy voice replied. Erci turned to her to offer a small smile.
"He'll be back soon you know? They've only been gone for five days, and they said it was a small trip. Sometimes you were gone for weeks and you always made it" Sam tried to reassure him.
Eric nodded. "I know all that, it's just that this is the first time" he sighed. "And I can't stop my brain from worrying, so it's a little frustrating" he laughed softly.
Sam had felt that way too, the first time Eric and Aaron had left Alexandria for an indefinite period. A deep sense of dread had come over her as her only two bearings passed the perimeter walls. She knew very few people at that time, and acclimatization had been complicated, Sam couldn't help but be terrified that someone would approach Caleb, so she stayed locked up for several days. The trust she naturally put in Aaron and Eric had been made easier by their meeting, for the rest of the community time had done the work.
"I understand," Sam replied with a nod. "But Aaron's been outside a few times now and Daryl knows what he's doing. That's why he chose him. They'll be back" she finished with certainty. "And you should seriously start sleeping, if you don't want Aaron to mistake you for one of those who hang out there" she smiled innocently.
Eric offered her a friendly nudge in response, finally laughing.
Sam put her arm around him and rested her head on his shoulder, it was their comfort hug. Eric returned the favor by grabbing her hand that was now on his other shoulder and resting his head on hers.
"Good thing you're here," he assured as he closed his eyes.
After a few minutes of silence, babbling could be heard from upstairs. Eric raised his head, and Sam straightened up.
"For a second there, I actually thought you fell asleep on my head Eric" Sam said before yawning.
"I really think I was close." Eric stood up from the chair stretching and finishing his cup of coffee. "Can I take care of Caleb this morning?" he asked. "It'll take my mind off it."
