It was late in the morning when frantic knocking against the door made Sam quickly put down the spoonful of mashed potatoes she was handing to a hungry Caleb.

"I'll be right back honey," she said as she quickly got up to go answer it.

Sam found herself face to face with Rick, in his uniform pacing the porch, a concerned look on his face. She opened her mouth to say something, but he beat her to it.

"I went to see Deanna, she wouldn't listen. I went to see Jessie, just now, but she refuses any help. But look around ! " he finished, embracing the city with a sharp wave of his arm.

Sam looked around, the Jonhson's son was walking his dog, a red balloon attached on his wrist. Further away, people were talking and laughing. She didn't really understand what he was getting at and looked at him, shaking her head slightly and beginning to worry.

Rick had calmed down a bit, his breath was still a bit difficult as he leaned forward, dejected.

"Excuse me," he sighed. "Would you mind going back with me? At Jessie's, I know I can make her see reason and if you're there maybe she'll listen to me," he asked.

The sound of a bowl falling in the room behind her woke Sam from her torpor. "Yes, yes of course. Just give me a minute," she said. Rick nodded and watched her rush into the house, the door left open behind her.

Once inside, Sam walked over to Caleb's highchair, the plastic bowl was lying on the floor, and by some miracle, had fallen on the good side without anything spilling. She placed it on the dining room table.

Just as she was about to call him, Eric came out of the shower and came down the stairs, his hair soaked.

"I'm sorry I absolutely have to go, will you finish feeding him please ?" she asked her friend who nodded, watching her quickly put on her shoes.

She kissed Caleb's blonde head as he stared blankly at the mashed potatoes that must have seemed awfully far from his stomach. But she soon heard him rejoice as Eric pulled out the chair and stood in front of him, Sam closed the door, turned to Rick and exhaled.

"I'm ready."

They quickly arrived at Jessie's house and to Sam's surprise, Rick entered without taking the time to knock. She followed closely and met Jessie inside, tears reddening her eyes. Jessie looked at the two arrivals with a panicked and lost look.

"What are you doing, the both of you?" she asked, shaking her head.

Rick seemed to know exactly what he was going to say, so Sam let him approach and speak.

"You know your son asked for a gun? To protect you," Rick was now facing Jessie.

Sam, herself shocked watched her friend take in the magnitude of this annconce and how her tears redoubled.
