warnings: the great depression, burning house, fires, mentions of death
-----------------
You stuck out your head through the window, feeling the warm summer air on your face, the sun shining brightly down the sad, sad world.

You looked down at the country roads, seeing a familiar man in khaki shorts, a neat brown shirt, and a beret, holding a basket filled with orange-looking fruit.

“Hey! Clementine!” You called out, waving your hand out from the window to try and get his attention.

It was Seungkwan, a guy you recently started having feelings for. He was helping your neighbor, Joshua, pay rent by selling clementines in the countryside.

Clementine was a nickname you created for him since he was always selling clementines.

Seungkwan turned around upon hearing the familiar nickname.

“Up here, Clementine!” You continued to wave around until he finally looked up and saw you.
He was squinting because the sun was in his eyes. Seungkwan lifted his hand to his face to give his eyes some shade.

You were smiling brightly and waving to him. A week before, you had confessed your feelings to Seungkwan. He found you a bit awkward to be around at first but when you grew more confident in winning him over, he started to warm up to you.

You started developing feelings for him a month ago when you saw him playing with a stray dog that he didn't have enough money to feed. The way he gave the puppy warmth in this hard time made you smile. After that, he just seemed so genuine and kind in everything he did.

Seungkwan looked around, hoping that Joshua didn't catch you calling him that nickname again.

“Hey! I told you to not call me that!” Seungkwan shouted back, looking up at you.

You giggled.

“How much more until Joshua's family can pay off rent?” You asked, seriously. “How about your family? Are you guys paying rent fine?”

“My family is barely getting by, they don't even know I'm selling clementines!” Seungkwan replied. You didn't expect him to reply, usually, he found you more like a pest than anything, so his reply made your heart race. Seungkwan continued, “Joshua really has to thank me! They only have 7 dollars left to pay off this month's rent. I'm running out of clementines too.”

“When you run out of clementines, want to help me make clothing? I'll teach you how to sew.”

Seungkwan nodded sarcastically. “Yes yes, I totally wouldn't be off working in the dusty railroads with your father!”

You laughed and could see a hint of his smile too.

“Y/N! Bring the laundry to dry on the clothing line!” Your grandmother shouted from the kitchen, her voice echoing through the nearly empty and small house.

“Yes, yes, grandmother!” You replied, turning your head inside the house so that she could hear you.
You turned back to Seungkwan, who was still looking up at you.

“Let me guess,” Seungkwan said, removing his hand from covering the sunlight. He was squinting again because of the bright sunlight.

Seungkwan placed his hands on his hips. “You're going to ask me to hang your laundry with you again? I'm telling you, I won't do it!”

Suddenly, Joshua walked in and took the clementines.

“Seungkwan, thank you for always helping. My grandma and I already finished selling our products, we can take care of the rest.”
