[68] Vernon Imagine: Why Don't You Know?

Vernon's heart was beating out of his chest.

Just feeling the slight brush of your arm made his heart flutter immensely. He almost couldn't focus on the lyrics that he was writing down. Everything in his head that he came up with would completely vanish when he sees you hopping your head to the instrumental. He couldn't help but stare at you.

Some probably would have mistaken him for a sculpture because he was just frozen in place. Vernon was just gazing at you who had your eyes resting shut as you listened to genius Woozi & Bumzu's music piece, completely unaware of your surroundings. His smile faded as his eyes became drawn to the smile on your face as you swayed from side to side, in your world.

Vernon's elbow was on the table, holding up his face. The song ended with a piano solo. You had a satisfied smile on your face, Woozi and Bumzu did not disappoint. With an excited heart, you opened your eyes, only to meet Vernon's.

You two were in the studio, sitting at a table at the corner. The only thing lighting up the room were lamps, in each corner; there was also one that stood beside the table.

Now both of your hearts were about to burst. Your heart was racing. You dug your nails in your palm and looked away, not realizing that Vernon did the same.

Your feelings for each other were so clear, yet you guys still believed that the other wasn't interested. Vernon turned back to you and took off your headphones.

You swiveled back to face him and took a deep breath.

“So, what do you think? What kind of vibes does it emit?” Vernon asked, placing the headphones on the table, right next to his sheet of paper with writing all over.

“Mmm… It sounds a bit like it'll be the soundtrack to an unrequited love story.” You replied, looking up to the ceiling, recalling the beautiful piano. Vernon nodded like he was thinking the same thing. “It sounds beautiful but at the same time, it's mixed with a bit of a disappointed and hopeless feeling. What have you come up with?”

You looked down at the paper and read the lyrics. Surprise swept your whole body. It was like you and Vernon shared the same brain. Perhaps that was the kind of mood that Woozi and Bumzu were going for?

The lyrics were only for his rap parts. The lyrics included comparing his crush to a flower and him expressing his frustration on how his crush is always so naive despite his hints.

“How did you come up with this?” You asked, genuinely curious.

“You know- just experience.” Vernon nodded with a smile on his face.

You laughed a bit because what he was telling through his lyrics was exactly how you felt. You had a soft smile on your face. “Oh, really?”

Vernon gazed at you, completely distracted by your innocence. “Well, you know, it's just because you're always not realizing that I'm trying-”

He stopped mid-sentence and froze. Vernon didn't even realize that he sounded like he was sulking. You blushed when you heard those words slip through his mouth and into your ears. You stared at the blank wall in front of you, unable to process what was happening. His words replayed in your head a million times before you finally got the message.

He liked you.

Vernon liked you.

He was feeling just like you. He liked you but you didn't notice because you thought he only thought of you as a friend. Thinking back on it, you felt stupid. Why didn't you know? How did you not know?

Vernon's smile was frozen on his face. His eyes looked at your reaction. His ears turned bright red.
After what seemed like minutes of just frozen statues you finally moved. You turned to Vernon. He gulped and looked at you with a nervous smile. He still wasn't sure how you felt about him.

The lamp standing beside the desk flickered for a second. Your eyes met.

It was the perfect time and it could be your only chance. You took a deep breath, staring into his eyes while your heart fluttered like crazy.

“Vernon,”

“Hm?” His eyebrows lifted slightly and he tried to remain calm but his heart was about to make him explode.

“I like you.”

Vernon's ears grew even redder. Your eyes darted from his eyes to ears, realizing that his red ears were his way of blushing. A warm smile grew on his face and he began to laugh.

“OH, Are you serious? Why didn't you tell me earlier??” He covered his mouth shyly and continued to giggle. You followed along with his laughter and looked down shyly.

“What do you mean?” You asked, lifting your head to look back at him. He was still smiling. His smile sent butterflies to your stomach.

“So you liked me back…?” Vernon glanced at his lyrics then back at you. “You know, I like you too. It's just you were always so innocent so I thought you didn't feel the same way.”

You laughed and buried your head in your arms on the table.

Then, you turned to Vernon.

“You're the one that didn't know anything!” You replied. Your eyes met again. “I liked you too, okay?”

Vernon giggled softly and tilted his head. His bright smile and eyes held a different gaze now. A hint of confidence and fluttering.

“Why didn't we both know then?” Vernon asked, scratching his head.

Both of you realized then, that you two were just two freaking fools in love.
