It was over

It was over. It was finally over. Nico was able to go home, to his best girl Y/N after ten long months of being on the other side of the country.

Although Switzerland wasn't on active duty with fighting, they still had to defend their borders. They helped the refugees and people escape from the Germans. Nico did his part, and it was time for him to come home.

The entire train ride back to Naters, Nico was nervous. He didn't know why he was. She was still gonna be there for him...right? Nico wrote to her constantly. He was always thinking about her.

Thinking about her smile...about her warmth. He thought about her cooking and how she made an amazing meatloaf that would make a grown man cry. He often thought about the soft piano she would play in the evenings, and how it sometimes put him to sleep on the couch in their living room.

Nico thought about how she cried the day he left. How she gave him an extra kiss and hug goodbye, hoping it wasn't going to be the last one. He didn't want her to see him cry, and he wasn't about to let that happen. He sat in the back of the train and watched as the mountains grew closer, and the town he'd known his whole life grow smaller. He cried to himself for a while until he eventually fell asleep, thinking about her soft piano music.

But now it was the opposite. Now it was the mountains getting smaller and his hometown getting bigger. Now he was excited, for the first time in nearly a year. He looks at the photo of the two of you in his hand, the one that he's kept close to his heart for ten months. It was taken just after your wedding you held in the court, a few weeks before he left. It was an on-the-fly decision that the two of you made and followed through with, and it was the best one.

The pair didn't have any rings bought, and she didn't have something borrowed or blue. All she had was love for Nico, and that was enough. It was enough to get her by for the next few months as she waited in agony to see her love once more.

Stepping off the train he said goodbye to some friends he had made, met their wives and children, but Nico had someone else on his mind. Skipping out of the train station he headed for the neighborhood where they had bought a house together. He felt terrible leaving her with a new house all by herself. It didn't matter how many times she told him not to feel bad, he still did. He hated that he had to leave her.

He walked down the streets that he remembered fondly. Everyone was joyous. They were over the moon that the war was over and that their loved ones were home. A few people gave him warm smiles as he walked down the sidewalk, his backpack heavy on his shoulders as he neared the end of the street where his house was. Where his love was.

Why am I nervous?

Knocking on the door, he waited. Patiently. Panic started to flow through his veins, thinking to himself what if she moved? What if she got tired of waiting? But his thoughts were soon thrown out, along with his doubt as the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen opened the door.
