Nayeon's pov
Why can't I be happy? Why can't I have a family? Why did I have to be born right here among so many places?
(Flashback)
10 years earlier
People rushed to our house. They took my mother by her arms and carried her out.
"Mom, Mom!" I started screaming with tears in my eyes.
"Nayeon! Let me go!"
My mother squirmed but in vain. I tried to follow her but one of those men stopped me. I have not seen her since that day.
My father had died before my birth, I no longer had anyone.
8 years later
Jennie, my best friend, also an orphan, had decided to escape.
"Won't it be dangerous?" I asked her.
"Nayeon, would you rather stay here?" she asked me looking at me with a serious look.
"No but..."
"I promise I'll come and get you. Wait for me."
Jennie took my hands and looked me in my eyes. We were the same age but we had been mothers to each other. It had been hard to grow up without food, without a family, without anything or anyone.
"Good luck, Jennie" I told her, smiling at her.
Needless to say, Jennie never returned. I found out that they had killed her. Those criminals had taken my family and my best friend away from me.
(Present)
Why is it all lit up at night on opposite side while I have to sleep in this dark house? I have to be able to escape. For Jennie, for Mom, for all those who have suffered. I hate being Korean. I hate North Korea.
