"𝐃o you solemnly swear to govern the people of this kingdom and its dominions according to the statutes, customs, and laws laid down by your forebears?" The king inquired, his voice echoing through the grand throne room.
It was the day the entire kingdom of Camelot had anticipated: Arthur's twenty-first birthday, the day he would become the crown prince.
I stood among the other maidservants, having spent the morning preparing our ladies and lords for this momentous occasion. Arthur knelt before his father in his ceremonial red and gold robes. My gaze flicked to the steward holding a cushion with the gold crown resting atop it.
"I do, sire," Arthur said, glancing up at his father with unwavering determination.
"Do you promise to exercise mercy and justice in your deeds and judgments?" The king's question hung heavy in the air.
I couldn't help but let a smile grace my lips as I watched Merlin, standing off to the side, beamed proudly at Arthur.
"I do, sire," Arthur repeated, his voice steady and strong.
The king raised a golden scepter above Arthur's head. "And do you swear allegiance to Camelot now and for as long as you shall live?" Uther bellowed, lowering the scepter in front of his son's face.
Arthur grasped the scepter firmly. "I, Arthur Pendragon, do pledge life and limb to your service and the protection of this kingdom and its people."
Father and son shared a moment of mutual respect before Uther took the crown from the steward. "Now, being of age and heir apparent from henceforth," Uther declared, placing the crown on Arthur's head, "you shall be the crowned prince of Camelot."
Applause filled the room as Arthur stood tall and proud, turning to face the crowd.
"I believe my mother is smiling," Saige whispered.
I glanced at Lady Vestalis, who stood near the king, her face lit with a rare, genuine smile. "Hmm."
"She's happier than Arthur and Uther combined that Arthur is made heir apparent," Saige continued. I glanced at Thea, standing beside her mother, beaming with delight. "Even Thea is overjoyed."
"Why does your sister stand beside your mother, but you do not?" I asked, curiosity piqued.
"Because she is a lady-in-waiting," Saige sighed. "And I chose to follow my destiny wherever it may lead me." She turned to look at me, determination in her eyes. "I will not let my mother or a man dictate how I live my life."
