"𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞."

"I can if that means you won't leave."

A sigh escaped my lips, and I stared at Wren from under her dark blue blankets. She shifted, gripping the blankets tighter around and I just let her. Because it was hard for her—me not being here.

Even though it was only a few months since Arthur rescued me and brought me back to Camelot, it didn't ease the pain that Wren went through in my absence. She never left my side.

The first couple of days, she clung to me, never letting go not even when Lady Vestalis threatened her. Then the next couple of weeks, Wren followed me everywhere, from my duties around the castle to the market. She never left my side, gripping tightly to my skirts, and I didn't mind even if it made scrubbing the Vestalis floor or making up their beds go slower.

But we couldn't stay in here all day, especially not when the king had requested Maeve and the Vestalis' presence in the council chambers.

"I'll stay with her."

I turned, and Catherine walked into the room. "I can't ask that of you."

"Yes, you can," Catherine said. "Go. Wren and I will go to the library until you return."

I rubbed my lips together, hesitating, and turned back to Wren, pulling back her blankets until I saw her face and the fear in her eyes. "I have to go, but I am coming back."

"Okay." The word left Wren's mouth and pulled at my heart.

I kissed her temple and turned, leaving her in Catherine's hands.

Once the door closed behind me, I lifted my skirts and ran down the hall. My flats slapped against the marble, but I didn't stop even when I felt I might slip. I was already late. Maids and knights stopped in the hard staring at me, but I didn't care I kept pushing my legs and arms faster. Not stopping until I slipped inside the big double wooden doors of the council chambers.

A breath left me as I stopped beside Maeve. She cocked a brow at me, opening her mouth, but the echoed of footsteps cut her off.
