When the dead start rising, Nathaniel Smith is home alone. His dad went out of state and trusted his 15 year old son to look after himself and so he did. For the first few months, Nate actually did okay surviving. When the neighbors left, Nate was the only one who stayed behind, insisting that he needed to wait for his father to return. He began to search through their houses for food and supplies after the first month passed and gathered everything in his own home.

After four months of being alone, other survivors assume that his house is empty and start to raid it. They find Nate, locked up in his room and they've been traveling for a few months with no food or shelter and are too out of it to do anything about him. After seeing a very pregnant Lori, Nate offers his rations with them and they stay the night in his house. Hershel insists that they bring him along since they're taking his supplies even though Rick is hesitant since they can barely fend for themselves, he reluctantly agrees and doesn't realize it's a decision that'll affect their lives forever.
