Fear

I looked up from the book I was reading when I heard a bunch of gasps from the other kids. A new girl walked in with reddish-orange hair the color of the leaves in fall. Her hair was mid-back length and in two braids. Her face was littered with freckles. She was extremely skinny but had a sense of adventure to her.

I was listening to Diana explain to the new girl,  Anne, where to sit when Moody and Charlie walked up to introduce themselves. "I'm Moody," Anne looks at him funny, "Oh, I'm so sorry." "Moody Spurgeon," He clarifies to her. "And I'm Charlie," Charlie states smiling at Anne. "Sloan, he's Charlie Sloan. And don't mind the boys there obnoxious." Diana whispers. "All except for Gilbert. He's dreamy but won't be here today."

"This is Ruby, Tillie, Jane, Josie, and Ivy," Diana introduces us to the girl. "Guys this is Anne," I smiled at her and go back to reading my book. I was in a good spot and want to finish before Mr. Philips comes and starts class. "It is a scrumptious pleasure to make your acquaintances. I will do my utmost to prove me worthy of your friendship." Anne says. She definitely a little different, but I think I will enjoy listening to her talk. Josie said something rude as she usually does. I'm too busy reading to pay attention to her squeaky voice. I've learned to not care about what she says. Anne will probably have to learn that because she seems on the verge to cry.

They talk about how she's an orphan. And then Billy makes a joke about her being a dog. Why are people so rude just because they can be. Why can't people ever have common sense and realize hey maybe I shouldn't be a complete asshole today. Josie makes another joke about how she's an orphan and I've had enough. It's the girl's first day of school in her whole life from what I learned. "Hey! Can we move on from the fact that she's an orphan? It doesn't seem like a big deal to me. So she may not have parents but that doesn't define her. I know you just don't like not having all the attention but she's new leave her be or we'll have issues." I threaten Josie. She walks away in a huff. Anne sends me a small smile.

I came just a few weeks ago so I remember being the new student. Thankfully I came from a good family with money so people were nice to me. Apart from Josie, she was still a jerk.

Anne sat in the front next to Diana. She turned around looking at me and Ruby "You have lovely hair," Anne beamed. "It's the loveliest shade of chocolate. I wished my hair was brown and not ugly orange." "Thanks," I smile back at her. She seemed to not like her hair. I wondered why it was truly a pretty color. "Your hair is fine Anne," Diana comforted the girl.

"Let's begin class now shall me," Mr. Phillips states as he walked in from the side door. "Oh, we have a new student I see. Introduce yourself." Anne slowly stands up and turns to face everyone. Not seeming as nervous as her body shows. "I'm Anne, with an E. Because Ann without an E is just too boring." I guess she is a little peculiar.

"Moody spell dreadful," Mr. Phillips moves on to spelling class. Anne sits down as Moody walks up to the board slowly probably dreading having to write it on the board. He isn't the best speller and everyone knows, including Mr. Phillips. He starts spelling when. "Moody, dreadful has an A after the E, but it's silent," Anne explains to Moody. "Yes, the a is silent as should you be too." Mr. Phillips snaps at her. I can tell he is already in a bad mood so today's going to be a long day.

As I knew it would it was a slow day, but the bell finally rang meaning it was time to go. I walked the short walk back to my house. Most people lived on farms here. We just have a large garden with a few chickens. This is probably since neither of us knows how to run a farm.

I walk in on my mom making muffins. Even though she works as a maid for the Barry's she always makes it a thing to be back at home for when I arrived. She will then head back over to the Barry's house for dinner to help the other maids. Mother always invites me to join her but Diana and I aren't that close. Mostly since her family employs my mom. It just made it a little awkward.

I instead decide to head to the big oak tree in our backyard. It had big thick limbs, so I can sit on them comfortably. I bring a book and an apple and climb up. It was hard to climb up so high with a dress on but I've learned how to do it easily. I found this spot after we moved here and have been coming here after school since.

A few days later I listen to the girl talk about what they plan on wearing this Sunday to church. It was mindless talk for me because I only have one dress that is nice enough for church. Unlike the other girls who have 2 or 3. The door opens in the back and they all turn. My curiosity gets the best of me and I turn to see Anne was walking in with a boy. The girls are shooting daggers at her with their eyes. I'm guessing he's the Gilbert everyone talks about. And I'm proven right when all the guys yell his name and welcome him back.

The girls all stand and walk towards Anne in the mudroom. I stay seated because I already know what's going to happen. They'll get mad at her and tell her to stay away from Gilbert. Only because Ruby is in love with him. She's probably crying right now too. Then when Ruby comes to sit by me I'll hug and comfort her as her best friend. I love her but she can be a bit dramatic at times.

The guys ask Gilbert about his trip. And how his dad is doing. Just boring stuff that isn't worth my attention when I hear something that does catch my attention. Billy asks him, "Why were you walking with that orphan girl." Like honestly why does that need to define her. If only humans had empathy. Maybe we wouldn't have a war going on right now. "Why not?" Gilbert asks the boys. "A cute girl is a cute girl." I guess someone else doesn't care about her being an orphan other than me.

Ahhhh! The first episode is done. What do y'all think? Are y'all excited for Gilbert? I know I am.
