I walk up the steps to the door and knock. When no one answers, I contemplate just going home but my mother raised me to do what's right. So I decide to go around back.

I walk around the house as I get closer to the back I start walking in an already made path. I hear what sounds like wood chopping when I turn the corner.

The backyard is clear and opens to a big field. There's a small shack that had a pile of wood stacked on one side of it. There's a chopping block where a curly hairs boy is chopping wood. "Oh? Gilbert I think you have a friend here," A voice calls.

I turn and see an older man smiling at me. "Ivy?" Gilbert asks as I look back at him. He walks over to me dropping the ax. "What are you doing here?" He asks. "Is she a schoolmate?" The man I assume as Gilbert's father asks.

"Yeah, she's one of the only other people who can beat me at the spelling Bee," Gilbert says smiling. I walk closer to the man extending my hand. "I'm Ivy Bailey," I say smiling. He shakes my hand before going into a fit of coughs.

"Let's get you inside," Gilbert says to his father. I stand there as the father and son walk into the house through the back door. "You can come in, you know?" Gilbert says poking his head back out. "Oh yeah uh yeah," I say awkwardly.

I walk in and Gilbert's father is in a nice comfy-looking chair by the fire in the living room. Gilbert and I are in a pretty good-sized kitchen that's attached to a smaller living room. "So what did you need?" Gilbert says taking his coat off. "Mr. Philips asked me to drop your books off. He said, I don't want my best student to get far behind," I say with my best man voice.

Gilbert smiles as he pulls a chair out for me to sit. "Thank you but I should get going. My moms expecting me," I say smiling. Gilbert's dad starts to cough again. "I'm fine!" He calls as Gilbert starts to head into the living room.

"Well, thank you. I don't want to get behind either," Gilbert says coming back over to stand by me. "Oh I should probably give you the books," I say setting my basket on the table. I grab the ones Mr. Philips gave me to give to him. Gilbert goes to grab them. Our hands touch as he takes them. I don't know why that little gesture makes me feel weird inside but it does.

"I better get going now," I say smiling trying not to blush. "It was nice to meet you, Mr. Blythe," I call as I turn to head back out the door. "You can leave through the front door if you want," Gilbert says. "Oh thank you that might be better," I say following after the curly haired boy.

He leads me past the living room and into a small hallway that leads to a mudroom. "Well it was a pleasure as always," Gilbert says as he opens the front door. "See you when I see you next," I say smiling. He chuckles at what I said. "See you when I see you next too."

"What happened to you?" My mother asks as I walk through the front door she's putting her jacket on. "I had to drop school books off at Gilbert's house since he'll be out of school for a while," I explain while taking my jacket off. "Where are you going?"

"I have to help at the Barry's. Mary isn't feeling good so I have to do the evening work. Dinner is ready on the stove and I'll see you later," My mom says wrapping her scarf around her neck. "Hugs and kisses," She says before leaving.

I head to the kitchen to find the food. I lift the lid on the pot and fine beef stew inside. It was Noah's favorite. I grab a bowl from the cupboard and get to eating. I hope Mr. Blythe gets better. He's all Gilbert has left, I think.

The rest of the weekend passes by quickly. Ruby wasn't feeling very well so we couldn't hang out and I didn't feel like third-wheeling Anne and Diana who I guess can be friends now. They didn't explain it well when they came to invite me to the story club shack.

I walk to Ruby's with her embroidered pillowcase. I finished it last night while sitting with my mom. I decided to give it to Ruby now and not wait until Christmas in a few weeks. It's wrapped up in some white paper I drew on this morning for a nice pattern.

"Be back for lunch!" My mom calls from the kitchen. "I will. Love you," I yell as I get my sweater wrapped around my neck.

It snowed a little last night so everyone is fresh and covered in another layer of snow. I stay on the road so that I don't fall into a ditch or something since everything looks flat. The walk takes significantly longer due to the snow being up to my knees.

When I finally arrive at her house I'm sweating. Man, I hate the snow and cold and winter. I walk up her stairs to the front door and knock.

The door creaks open and Ruby's mother is standing in the doorway. "Oh Ivy, how are you?" Ruby's mother asks with a smile. "I'm good Mrs. Gillis. I came to drop off a gift for Ruby," I say. "Oh well, I know Ruby will appreciate it so much. Her throat is still very sore," Ruby's mother opens the door more motioning for me to come in.

"Oh I have to get back to my house fore lunch but here's the gift," I hand the gift to here. "Oh this wrapping if beautiful," She compliment the flowers I painted into the parcel. "We'll I'll be going. Have a lovely day," I turn to walk away and head back to my own house.

I know this isn't the best chapter. The second half is kinda a filler. The next chapter will be better and longer because of where we are in the story. I haven't run a spell check yet but I will later. Thanks for 400 reads. Love you <3.
