Summer of 5th year
.
Remus awoke late that night, at around 3, due to the squirming and restlessness coming from Sirius.
He kept shifting and small whimpers and muttering came from him.
"Please, please, I didn't do anything."
Remus' heart broke when he realized he was having a nightmare. He gently shook the boy's shoulder, causing him to sit up quickly. He winced in pain, but looked at Remus with panicked eyes nonetheless.
"You good, Pads," Remus asked.
Sirius' chest was going up and down with his rapid breaths and his eyes became watery. His hands shook and he grabbed onto the hem of Remus' sleeve, not completely ready to make skin to skin contact yet.
His nightmare terrified him. Flashes of pain and horror flashed before him, and he felt it as if it was real even if he knew it wasn't.
Remus sat there, letting Sirius grip onto the light blue sleeves of his jumper. He knew that Sirius needed a second before he wanted a hug, so he gave the raven-haired boy a moment to collect his thoughts as best as he could on his own.
Sirius shook his head and buried it in the crook of Remus's neck, letting violent sobs. Remus gently placed a hand on his back and rubbed gently, hoping to calm the boy's breathing down a bit.
"Breath, Sirius. You gotta breath, ok," he soothed
Remus took a deep breath, and to his relief, Sirius followed suit and took one as well.
This continued for about fifteen minutes, until Sirius' breath was even and calm.
"You wanna talk about it," Remus asked. "It may help."
"I- I guess so," Sirius muttered, his head still snuggled into Remus' shoulder.
"I-I was back at Grimmauld, and mother and father got mad at me for hanging out with you and James," he let out another sob.
"It was horrible, Rem. They used the cruciatus curse, a-and it hurt so much, Rem," he continued to cry into the fabric of Remus' jumper.
Remus had to push his anger down and attempt to comfort him," I'm so sorry, love. You didn't deserve that, nobody does."
Tears flowed down his face like raindrops down a window. Leaving streaks and racing to see which one gets to the bottom first.
It didn't feel like rain though. It felt like a storm.
Like thunder when he felt Remus' hand rub up and down his back, the comfort hitting him like thunder.
Like lightning when cursed light flashed in his vision, and he could almost feel the pain through the memory.
But, like a raindrop, he wasn't alone. He, for once in his life, knew that there would be someone to shield him from the storm.
That the sandy-haired boy he was cuddled into would be like an umbrella, not making it all go away, but making sure it didn't hit him or soak him despair.
And as the sound of eleven crows flew by the window, he knew that Remus would help him find his way through the storm.
