          In her junior year and his senior year of high school, Aurora—Rory—and Rafe became close after he pursued her for weeks on end. At first, it was to tease her and humor his friends. Although, after months of sitting out on cool summer nights with their toes in the water, and sharing a bed most sweaty nights, Rafe could not help but see her as more than a game to play. Soon after, Rafe finds himself getting involved in things that make him spiral out of control and put a rift in their friendship.

          Now, the college drop-out is looking for new things to distract himself—or make him high—while Rory is out trying to make something out of her life. When she returns for the summer of John B and Sarah's disappearance, she's surprised to find that all the warning signs and unanswered calls have truly changed Rafe, and they are strangers once again.
