TW: Very brief mentions of death!
"How pitifully weak."
Chara didn't say anything in response. Their eyes never drifted from the spot that their best friend.
Their brother.
Had died in. His dust spread out on the cool floor, slowly disintegrating in the water.
"Nothing?"
Ashamed, Chara lowered their head, burying it in their knees.
"Why do you look so sad? This is the result of your actions."
Chara scowled. "What do you know."
The voice cackled. It wasn't a friendly cackle. It was harsh. Unkind.
"You foolish child. I see everything. I know everything. You let your anger get the better of you.
"Now you have to live with the consequences."
Chara shut their eyes, resisting the urge to cover their ears with their scarred and bloodied hands.
"No... He... We were supposed to free the monsters! He... He was supposed to..."
"And now he's dead."
The words hit Chara like a brick. Weighing down on their shoulders, as if they'd break their bones at any given moment.
They gritted their teeth, their hands darting for the pink striped blue sweater. "Stop it!" Even though there was no one there, Chara felt a cool breeze of air brush their chin, replicating the feel of a hand touching their chin.
"Chara. Don't let your feelings get in the way of our plan." The voice muttered in their ear, warm air brushing against the side of their right cheek. Chara flinched, crawling away until they felt their back hit a wall.
The voice chuckled in amusement. "You will never be able to get away from me.
"No matter where you run, or where you hide. I will be right there. Now. Don't fail me." Chara waited a few seconds before releasing a sigh that slowly began to burn their lungs.
He was right. They knew that. This was all to save the two humans. Their plan would not go behind schedule because of petty feelings for a small flower.
A small flower that Chara tried to convince themselves meant nothing to them.
Annoyed, Chara clicked their tongue against the roof of their mouth, covering their ears in hopes of putting an end to that situation.
They waited a few momente before lifting their hands from their ears. To their relief, they heard no one.
He had left.
~~~~~~~~"He isn't."
"You're in denial."
"Of course I am!! He's not dead!" You hissed. That's what you had been repeating to yourself until your mind had no choice but to think that it must be true.
"We found dust. I have the rest of the monsters supervised at all times. It couldn't be anyone else."
You growled. "Then maybe, you just weren't paying much attention."
Alphys' eye twitched at your comment, an uneasy smile spreading across her yellow scales.
"I have been w-working my ass off. Day and night. I have been monitoring monsters and that little brat's, sending search parties to look for t-that human.
"And you say that I'm not paying enough attention?"
You let out a sigh. You knew you shouldn't push the blame. But the possibility of the poisonous words that left that tongue of hers were sickening.
He couldn't be dead.
He was only a child.
There was so much that you wanted to do with him.You wanted him to see the surface for the first time, watching his eyes glimmer in excitement as he sees his surroundings.
Now he was never going to see that.
"what's goin' on in here." A gruff voice called from the entrance of the lab. Sans' phalanges awkwardly scratched the dry fur off of his coat while Papyrus brought his hands up to his hips in disgust.
Alphys sighed, irritation evident. "The flower's dead."
You unwillingly sniffled as a tear trickled down your (s/c) cheeks. "He... He's not dead...He can't be."
Alphys groaned, her head falling into her hands.
The two skeletons stayed silent, not knowing what or how to respond. With a unique shade of red blooming on the taller skeleton's cheekbones, he makes his way to your side, putting a stiff hand on your shoulder.
He didn't say anything.
You didn't need him to."...I need a moment." You muttered once you felt tears start streaming from your eyes. Before anyone could say anything, you made your way past Sans and paced through the hallways of that lab.
That damned lab that you began to despise.You despised all of this.
You just wanted all of this to end, to be happily on the surface with your dad.
Your poor father.
You wondered how he was handling your disappearance. It had almost been a few months since you had fallen down.How was he managing?
"E-er... (Y/n)-"
You instinctively held your hands that were buried into fists in front of you as you turned to meet the unknown individual.
To your surprise, you were met face to face with the royal scientist, who seemed to have a nervous expression plastered on her face.
She hesitantly held her shaking hand in front of you to reveal a crinkled tissue.
You sniffled once again, taking the tissue from her hands and wiping your tears. You muttered a small thank you once you were done, slowly crushing the soft fabric with your fingers.
"I... I should know wh-what it's like to lose someone close.." She whispered in a hushed tone. A soft tone you weren't expecting.
"This must be draining, n-no?" She asked, pushing up her glasses.
You didn't say anything.
She already knew the answer.She sighed, turning around to go back to her desk.
Finally coming to a decision, she stopped, her head lowering.
"(Y/n)."
"Yes..?"
"...I'm sorry for your loss."
After those small words escaped from the lizard's mouth, she hurried off back to her lab.
Those small, few words played on repeat. You sobbed into your hand, choking on the tears that ran down your swollen cheeks.
You cried to the sound of monsters, either chatting amongst one another or complaing about how impatient they were.
Eventually, the sounds of each of the voices combined lulled you to sleep, leaving your body slumped against the wall in the hallway.
