Part three
You try to sneak away later in the evening. The sun is just going down casting golden rays across the mountains. You wince at the thought of crossing them, but you suck the summer air through your teeth, determination settling into your jawline. You pace back and fourth at the edge of the forest a couple times. Is this the right choice? It's true that you are being pursued but the Madrigal family seemed nice. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to stay longer? No, it will only hurt them if they get wrapped up in a murder plot.
"Sooooo, you planning on leaving so soon?" Your heart leaps into your throat as you whirl, your hands raised in some attempt to shield yourself. Camilo slips out from behind a tree, a devilish grin bursting from the corners of his face.
"You!" You round on him, somewhat annoyed. How long had he been watching you?
"If you're set on leaving I won't stop you," he holds up his hands, "but I really think it couldn't hurt for you to stay. It's been so long since we've had anyone from outside the village come through."
"I don't want to force you all to take care of me," you glance at his eyes,"Besides, the people from my village are still after me and I don't want to put you or your family in danger by being associated with me." You once again turn to go, but the boy catches you.
"I don't think you understand, We can help! You've seen me transform and, well, all of the other members of my family have a gift of some sort. Trust me, we can help you."
"Why would you want to help? You hardly know me?"
"Chalk it up to me being utterly wooed by the mysterious stranger who strolls into my life?" He feigns a kissy motion while winking. You roll your eyes.
"Yeah, right. Anyways, I should get going. Thank you for your hospitality but I really shou-" your thoughts are interrupted as a shout come from the town. In the distance, black smoke rises from the tree line like a phantom roaring after you. Camilo bolts towards his family without a second thought. You hesitate, the forest is right there, you could make a clean get away, but instead you turn back. Where is smoke, there is fire.
You catch up with Camilo on the way, you're both panting hard when you reach the house. Half of it is engulfed in flames, shooting flickering embers into the sky. Camilo does a quick head count. Everyone is out. Pepa and Felix rush out, throwing themselves to their knees for their son.
"My Camilo, are you ok? We were so worried, we thought you were still inside." Dolores emerges and immediately goes to join the rest of her family. You stare in wonder at burning house, but something is telling you to run. This can't be just a coincidence, you wander around the back to where the rest of the Madrigals are using their gifts to help put out the fire. The ground is covered in footprints from everyone running back and fourth but a couple of tracks have horses with them.
"One, two, three," you murmur to yourself," you try to follow the three sets of horse tracks but lose them in the chaos.
"Y/N, there you are. Will you help us put out the fire?" Mirabel offers you a bucket of water. You take it, and get to work. Your pursuers will just have to wait. Despite everyone's efforts, the fire is still spreading, it has now engulfed the whole back of the house almost making it look as if it glowed.
Suddenly the ground began to shake and the house began to move, rips and cracks forming at the seams as it separated to self from the burning mass. Walls rearranged, and flooring rose from the earth and it cut off the back half of itself like a lizard drops its tail.*Don't forget to Vote and Comment! Thanks!*
