Camilo's POV
I wasn't sure how long we stayed in Casita. The hours of screams and explosions lasted well into the night. Mirabel checked in on us some time after midnight asking us to help injured people into the house. Y/n glanced at me, some form of pitty in their eyes. I wasn't sure what to make of it. We wordlessly accompanied Mirabel, who's demeanor had become far more serious than before. Julieta lay collapsed in a chair, uninjured but exhausted. I hurried over to to help, but found she had chosen this brief moment of rest for herself and should not be disturbed.
We went to work setting wounds and Abuela Alma watched over everything. Giant torrents of rain washed over the valley and in the distance I could see large boulders cast in the glow of lightening arcing across the sky.
"Camilo, there you are!"
I turned to see my mother come forward, dress and hair slightly sizzling. She embraced me, a saddened look in her eye. Something was off and she silently lead me to where Abuela say. Y/n asked to follow along, but my mother shook her head.
"This doesn't concern you. As a citizen, only worry about what happens next, please be at ease while we defend this community." Y/n seemed taken back, their face disappearing into the darkness.
"Camilo, come here." Alma held out her hand, shaking but grasped mine with a strength that cut deep into my heart. "We need you, Camilo. We know precious little about what our attackers are really after and we need eyes on the inside. This is asking a lot already, but would you be willing to sneak inside the enemy's lines and find out what is going on?"
"Mo-" I was cut off by Alma shaking her head, "I have already discussed this with Pepa. The choice is up to you."
I hesitated. If this was truly for the best, I wanted to help, had to help, and yet the foreboding dread in my stomach unsettled me.
"I will go."
"No, mi Camilo!" Pepa's voice erupted from her throat in a sob sending a boom of thunder shaking the lands.
"Pepa! We talked about this!"
"No! He is to stay safe, I can't let him outside the village!"
"Pepa, your son is blessed by this house to take on any appearance he chooses. Out of us all, he will be safest behind enemy lines."
I didn't know what to say, but I hugged my mother tightly. There was a way, I thought, I could get her to let me go.
"Mami, don't worry, I will not go alone. We can find some body to help, some one who can watch my back, is that ok?"
"Pepa, you cannot hold on to him forever."
"Fine,"I saw her throw up her hands in defeat, but you better return here as soon as you can, you understand?"
I nodded, grimly and watched as she left. Alma approached and began to inform me of my mission. I was to sneak past the battle field and use my shape shifting to find any information I could. Dolores would be on the look out for any report I would give and would relay any information to the family. I agreed and asked who I would be working with. Alma said my mother thought that Y/n would fit best since she already had encounters with these enemies and we had little understanding of the world outside our village. I began to exit just as Y/n came in.
"Hey, Camilo? Did something happen? Your mother just-"
"Follow me, Y/n, we have something to do." I reached out and snatched their hand, quickly leading them out of the tent.*Thanks for reading so far! Remember to vote and comment!*
