Envy

Why not me?

I try and I try, relentlessly;

But no matter what I do,

The only one they've praised is you.

All I can think is "That's my spot"

yet over time I am forced to accept that it's not.

This green-eyed snake leaps into my heart,

and the burning jealousy tears sisters apart.

Years go by, the pressure breaks,

and my friend the snake silently wakes.

We could have been so close, you know?

Had I ignored the bitterness years ago.
