Chapter 18.

Once we were at Kie's house on the Figure Eight she let me use her phone to call the police station to see if I could get an update about JJ.

"Hi, my name is Savannah Routledge and I just want to see if JJ Maybank has been released yet?" I asked the officer on the phone

"Miss, his father has just picked him up" I hung up without another word. His dad has picked him up, this can't be good.

"Savannah, please tell me you will join us at Midsummers tonight" Kie's mum said to me

"Uh sorry, I don't think so" I said politely

"There is a dress in Kiara's closet, if you change your mind" She smiled politely

"You have to come, please, I don't think I could survive it without you" Kie begged

"So much has been going on Kie, I really don't want to hang with a bunch of kooks" I said

After Kie begging me for over an hour, I agreed to go with her to Midsummers. It would be a good distraction, I suppose.

Kie had on a lilac satin dress while I had a white mini dress with long see through sleeves. It was beautiful, Kie's mum has always had good taste.

"This is disgusting" Kie said looking in the mirror at herself

"I actually really like mine" I said honestly

"I look like a bourgeois pig" Kie said making me laugh at her dramatics

"Will you please not worry about socio economic injustice for one night Kiara?" Her mum said coming into the room.

"Mom, people not three miles from here, like Savannah, have no power, no running water and we are going to Midsummers. That's so tone deaf" Kie said to her mum

"Savannah is always welcome here, you both know that" She said looking at me, I smiled back.

"Do you know how hard we had to work to get into the Island Club? Twelve years of grovelling and we also had to cough up a huge chunk of dough, and do you know why we did that?" She asked Kie

"To keep up with the Joneses?" Kie said making me laugh

"No, so you could have the experiences I had as a child" She said looking at her daughter

"Do you know what the Island Club is?" She asked us both

"A factory farm for debutants" I said making Kie chuckle and making Kie's mum look at me

"It's a nice place, with nice people where you can do fun stuff" She said to us

"With out of touch rich people, while the island sinks slowly into the ocean" Kie said back

"Okay, you two, put your party faces on if you want to live" She said leaving the room.

We got to the Island Club and saw all the other rich kook families arriving, I spotted Pope across the lawn and pointed him out to Kie and we made our way over.

"Excuse me sir, do we have to shuck these ourselves?" Kie said in a terrible english accent "Cause it might mess up my costume" She said once Pope saw it was us

"We wouldn't want that now, would we?" Pope said going along with the joke

"You two look beautiful" Pope said to Kie and I

"Hey, have you heard from JJ?" Pope asked me

"No, no yet" I said with a sad smile

"He'll be alright. He has the survival instincts of a cockroach" Kie jokes
