Are They Your Friends?

It felt different in the Daycare that day. My friends had heard me talking about it, and how amazing it was, so they wanted to see it for themselves. I had agreed, but little did I know the consequences of my actions...

"Sun?" I walked up to him nervously, and right away he could sense something was up, so he kneeled down to my height.
"Is everything okay Sunshine?" He smiled, taking my hands and holding them in his.
"Yeah... well..." I trembled, not being able to find the right words. "Would it... would you... would you be o-okay with... with..." I just couldn't get it out, my nerves overwhelmed me. Sun didn't look cross, though. Instead, he looked thoughtful, as if trying to figure something out.
"If you want to," he began after a moment. "You can write it down? Speaking can be difficult, and I don't want you stressing out more than you already have been." He smiled gently as he took me over to the arts and crafts table. He picked up a sheet of paper and a green gel pen and handed it to me. We sat down, Sun being far too tall for the tiny chairs, but he didn't seem to mind. I shakily picked up the pen and scribbled onto the page. He read it aloud once I had done.
"Would you let my friends come to the Daycare? Well I don't see a problem with that Sunshine!" His bright smile calmed my anxiety, and his joyful voice sent a wave of relief through me. I stood up and wrapped my arms around him.
"Thank you Sun. I'm sorry that-"
"Sunshine, please, there's no need to apologise. You haven't done a single thing wrong! I get that sometimes it's hard to put into words what we're trying to say, but there are solutions, so please try not to get worried." His words of comfort never ceased to make me feel better.
"I really mean it Sun," I grinned, still hugging him. "Thank you."

The day had finally arrived, and I couldn't wait! I quickly got dressed, and ran down to get my breakfast. I scoffed down my bowl of Shreddies and finished getting ready. My mum had already packed my bag, so I was ready to go.

As soon as we arrived, I saw them stood in a big group at the front of the building. I said goodbye to mum and eagerly ran out of the car.
"Y/N!" My friend Jason shouted. He waved at me, and everyone else turned around to see me. They smiled as I got closer to them, but I later realised that they weren't proper smiles at all. But I was too excited to process that. I already got excited even when they weren't here with me, let alone being here with them! I only had a few friends: Jason, Kate and Chloe. They sometimes weren't the nicest people, but you got used to it after a while.
"Do you guys wanna go in?" I asked, adrenaline pumping through my veins. They didn't match my enthusiasm, but they nodded, so we made our way inside.

"So," I began, pointing to the green slide and jumping up and down in excitement. "We have to slide down the slide to get in!"
"Really?" Kate sighed, rolling her eyes and mumbling something that I didn't quite catch. But I think she said something about how it's for babies. I decided to ignore her because I knew she'd love the Daycare!
"I'll go first, then you guys go next!" I climbed into the slide, and giggled as I hit the ball pit. Sun came over with his usual smile, and noticed that I was even more excited than usual.
"You're excited Sunshine!" He exclaimed brightly. I was just about to say why when I heard someone come down the slide. With a crash they landed in the ball pit. Then Jason's head emerged from out of the ball pit, and Sun's eyes shone.
"New friend!" He grinned, and skipped over to Jason. But just as he did, however, Chloe came rushing down the slide.
"Another new friend?" Then it must have clicked in Sun's mind. "Are these your friends you were talking about?!" He gasped, looking back at them, then at me. I nodded excitedly, and just as I did, Kate made her way down the slide.
"Wow Y/N you have so many friends!!!"
"It's not that many..." I grinned sheepishly at him. He looked utterly delighted to meet them, and I was super happy that they got to meet Sun!

"So, this is Jason," I began, gesturing at him.
"Hi..." he shifted from one foot to the other. I was oblivious to his reaction of Sun since I was so full of adrenaline.
"It's lovely to meet you Jason!" Sun cheered, offering his hand for Jason to shake. Hesitantly, he shook Sun's hand, but didn't look too impressed.
"This is Chloe!" I pointed at her, and she looked shocked as if she'd been woken up from a nice dream.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Chloe!" He grinned, extending his hand out for her to shake. She sighed and let Sun shake her hand, but with some added groaning at the end.
"And finally, here is Kate!" I did a little jazz hands, and Sun couldn't help but giggle. No one else did though. But I still smiled.
"I'm not shaking that thing's hand."
Sun's smile faded a little, but he was determined to make a good impression in front of them. But I could tell there was conflict going through his mind.
"It's... very nice to meet you Kate!" Sun sounded a bit aggressive saying her name, and she in return scowled at him for a split second. Still, it was the first thing I had chosen to notice about my friends. I brushed it off, but that had been a big mistake.

"So, what do you guys wanna do?" Sun asked cheerily. "We have arts and crafts, the play structure, the ball pit... the nap time area... actually I don't think we'll have nap time today..."
"Nap time??" Chloe blurted. She covered her mouth with her hands. "Oh I'm sorry, I forgot Y/N was a sensitive little snowflake!" All three of them giggled, to my complete shock and disappointment. But I had gotten used to this sort of thing from them.
"C'mon guys, let's go see what 'fun activities' we can do-" Jason snickered, and led them all away.

"Sunshine... are they really your friends?" Sun sounded angry, but also shocked. I nodded and smiled.
"They can be nice! They..." I paused, thinking of something, anything, to redeem them to Sun. But I couldn't think of one thing. To be honest, I didn't know why I still hung out with them. But I wanted Sun to give them a chance.
"Alright Sunshine, I'll give them another chance. But Moon here is getting a bit angry, and I don't want him to cause any chaos..." he said the last part as if he did, in fact, want Moon to cause chaos. I chose to pretend I didn't realise it though.

I walked over to them; they looked like they were talking to a child who was a little bit younger than them. I smiled. Maybe they've come to their senses! I thought, relief setting in. But then as I got closer, I heard their conversation.
"You're such a crybaby!" Kate spat in their face. "No wonder you're here, why would anyone want such a stupid crybaby like you as their child?" They laughed menacingly. My heart dropped. Why on earth were they doing that?

Sun sprinted over after hearing the child crying.
"What do you three think you're doing?!" He shouted, and I was honestly a bit scared of him as I'd never seen Sun angry before. "Bullying children is wrong, and for that..." he turned to me, and gestured to the light switch which was next to me. I nodded and flicked it off.

"You must be punished."

They ran out of the Daycare screaming, tears streaming down their faces.
"WHO'S THE CRYBABY NOW?!" Moon screeched, chasing them out. Luckily, this was after everyone else had left, so no one was around to witness Moon's rampage. Instead of fearing him, however, I laughed as they ran out screaming like babies. Finally, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders that had been there for years. I felt tears of happiness flow from my eyes.

Once Moon had made sure they were gone, he walked back over to me.
"I'm sorry about that, Starshine, I just had to let off some steam-"
I held him tightly, sniffling in his arms.
"Thank you Moon. You have no idea how much you've just done for me..." I burst into tears, letting them spill onto the floor. Moon's soft hand stroked my hair, and we stayed like that for who knows how long. Suddenly, he moved away, and sighed.
"I'm glad I could help Starshine, but I think it's time for Sun to come back. I'll see you soon, Y/N. Please make sure to stay safe, and to get to sleep on time!"
I giggled, and waved him goodbye.

Click! The lights quickly came back on, and Sun looked around, clearly panicked.
"Why did I let Moon do that?! Now I'm going to get in trouble and now you're going to hate me-"
"I'd never hate you Sun."
He wrapped me in a warm embrace, and I began to cry again.
"Thank you. Both of you..."
"I just did what any good person would do Sunshine." He smiled. This time, I was sure I wasn't going to let go of him.
