Meredith had always loved her job. It had always gave her a great feeling when she was able to tell the loved ones of her patients that they had survived. There was no feeling like it.

But there was also the downside of it. There were times when no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't save the patient. Which meant that she had to grow and break peoples hearts by telling them that their loved one wouldn't be coming home with them.

Luckily for Meredith today was one of them days were she just delivering nothing but good news. Which meant she was on cloud 9 when she left the hospital today as she headed to see her sister for the evening.

Growing up had never been easy for Meredith, constantly living in the shadow of her mother's reputation and expectations weighing her down. Her father wasn't around when she was younger. One day he was there, pouring her cereal for her and pushing her on the swings. The next day he was gone.

Just like that she was all alone.

But then by some miracle Susan had unexpectedly walked into her life, with a younger sister for her. Lexie. Susan had come into her life to make up for her fathers poor behaviour, telling her that she had immediately left him the minute she had found out that he had abandoned Meredith.

From the moment they met, Susan had opened up her home and her arms for Meredith to find a home finally. Her mother didn't seem to care that  another women was playing 'mom' to her as it meant that she didn't ever have to worry about Meredith and could spend all of her time working.

All of that was now in the past. She had a bright and wonderful future in front of her, that was all down to Susan and now Derek and Emily.

"Susan!" Meredith shouted as she walked into the house. "Lex! Is anyone home?"

"You know Meredith, any other person politely announces their arrival before storming in." Susan playfully rolled her eyes and walked towards her. "How are we dear?"

"I'm good thanks." Meredith moved to kiss Susan on the cheek. "Where's Lexie?"

"She's out. Again." Susan laughed and shook her head. "That girl is never at home anymore. Come through, I'm just finishing up a fresh pot of coffee."

"She's young, I mean you remember my years of being a teenager." Meredith couldn't help but laugh as she watched Susan turn to her with a frown on her face before she shook her head.

"Don't remind me. I'm too old to be going through that again." She laughed before pushing a cup of coffee in Meredith's direction as she went to sit next to her.

"You're not old Susan." Meredith took a sip of her coffee before turning to face her. "How have you been feeling anyways? Things aren't getting any worse are they?"

"I have my bad days." Susan watched as Meredith frowned, a deep concern etched on her face. "Just relax dear, you know how it is. My heart just doesn't work as well as it used to anymore."

"I will always worry about your Susan..." Meredith went to squeeze her shoulder. "Please don't be afraid to ask for help, I know I have work but if it comes to it then I will reduce my hours to help out with running Lexie around..."

"You will do no such thing." Susan insisted as she shook her head. "But I appreciate it." She quickly glanced at the time before pushing herself up.

"Will you be staying for dinner?" Susan asked as she started pulling ingredients out of the cupboard before turning to Meredith.

"Yeah I will if you don't mind." Meredith smiled. "Derek and Emily have gone out for a family dinner tonight so it will be too quiet being at home on my own."

"Everything going well then?" Susan asked as she raised her eyebrows.

"Everything is..." Meredith thought about everything before smiling. "Everything is perfect. So I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop and for things to go wrong." She couldn't help but laugh. However, deep down she really was waiting for the other shoe to drop.

"You shouldn't think like that Meredith. I know you haven't exactly had the easiest of times growing up and that has clearly effected your past relationships. But I'm glad you finally found your happiness with Derek. He's a good man." Susan continued to cook their dinner as she occasionally glanced at Meredith every now and then.

"Yeah he really is. Plus he is an amazing father." Susan couldn't help but notice the way Meredith's face lit up as she listened to her talk about Derek being a father. She knew that look anywhere.

"Hmm." Susan hummed which caused Meredith to stop what she's doing and look up at Susan with a slight frown on her face.

"What are you thinking?" Meredith pointed at her.

"Nothing. Nothing at all dear." Susan smiled to herself as she shook her head and stirred the pot.

"For some reason, I don't believe you." Meredith sat back and crossed her arms across her chest.

"Alright." Susan couldn't help but laugh when she saw Meredith sigh dramatically. Susan couldn't help but watch her, she really was glowing.

"Do you want some wine with your dinner?" Meredith asked which caused Susan to quickly turn towards her.

"Do you think that's a good idea?" Susan frowned. "I mean with everything..." she pointed up and down Meredith's body.

"What?" Meredith asked all confused. "Susan, what are you talking about?"

"I mean, you're pregnant, right..." Susan watched as Meredith's faced drop and her eyes went wide. "Oh..."

"I'm not pregnant Susan..." Meredith couldn't help but let the doubt run wild but she would never admit to that. "I'm not...I can't be..."

"Forget I said anything, I'm sure you're not." Susan waved her hand in the air. "I'm normally spot on with these things, must be my age." She laughed before turning back to the dinner.

"Yeah." Meredith laughed nervously before looking down at the wine in her hand as she moved to place it back on the shelf.

She knew it was probably nothing but she couldn't help but think about Susan's words. Her periods had never been regular but now when she thought about it, she was late. Really late...

But that just had to be down to stress, right?
