The Smoke that Chokes Us All

It was only just last month

That you had walked with me

Down the quiet streets of our neighborhood.

But now as I see your frail,

Helpless body lay before me,

I realize that we were too young to have understood

The consequences of our leader's actions.

For now I see the poison.

That thick black smog.

It coats the outsides of our houses

And the insides of our children's lungs.

Your death was only part of the beginning.

And now I'm afraid it's too late.

Too many people have suffered

At the hands of our cruel goddess called Fate.

I only wish

And hope that you have moved on,

A land of clear blue skies

And bright sunlight awaits us all.

It is a place,

A very special place,

Where the smoke of our lives is forever gone.
