Pirate King

━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━

Waking up has never been so interesting. You've escaped the gallows, run through a battlefield and stowed away on a pirate ship named the Treasure, all in the span of a single day. Even better, you've lost all your memories and have no idea who you are. Then you meet the Kim Hongjoong, captain of the Treasure, the ruthless Pirate King of the Caribbean. Life as an amnesiac on board a pirate ship doesn't seem very promising, but hey, anything's better than becoming shark food.

Q1.How did you come up with the title for your books?

A1. I came up with the title for pirate king because it was the title track for ateez's first album, all to zero! it was also the song that got me into ateez, and the song that inspired me to write the story pirate king! it still has a place in my heart

Q2.Would you and your main character get along?

A2. Chin hae was originally written to be a self-insert for readers, which is why some people might have felt that she had a bit of a too bland personality, but I think I'd get along with her! she's a little bit indecisive and is a little emotionally stunted due to her identity as a golem/human of a few months old, but she does genuinely care for her friends, can be savage and has her funny moments <3

Q3.What is your writing process like? Are you more of a plotter or a pantser?

A3. For long stories like pirate king, I'd like to have a rough plan of where my plot is going as I enjoy mysteries that have to be unraveled throughout the book and climax at the end of the story! while actually writing though, I tend to let whatever book/movie/song that has caught my eye at the time inspire me

Q4.What risks have you taken with your writing that have paid off?

A4. The biggest risk I've taken with writing was starting pirate king, actually! I used to be awful at finishing long stories after starting them, so I was worried that pirate king was going to be another case, but because the readers kept writing encouraging and positive reviews, it pushed me to endure and I'm really happy that I managed to finish it!

Q5.Do you play music while you write — and, if so, what's your favorite?

A5. Of course I do! there's no specific genre, but I like to listen to orchestral or instrumental for emotional parts, and light and cheery tunes when I'm writing fun scenes! my writing style and word choice is affected by the type of song I'm listening to when i write, so song choice is important

Q6.If your book were made into a movie, which actors would play your characters?

A6. If my book were made into a movie... I hope ateez acts as the actors... huhuhu, but honestly I'd want lee dohyun in my movie because i respectfully simp for that man TT I feel like he'd make a good wooyoung (18 again, anyone?)

Q7.Does writing energize or exhaust you? Or both?

A7. Both!! writing is energizing when I have words that I really need to get out and the writing juices are flowing, but it's such a chore when I'm tired or having a writer's block (every writer's worst nightmare). I can write for HOURS on end when the words are flowing, but when I don't, it's like trying to squeeze water out of a rock - infinitely annoying

Q8. How do you develop your plot and characters?

A8. I develop my plot and characters by... reflecting on moments in my own life, seeing stories of others, whether fiction or real life, or from song themes in songs that I happen to come across. it's been said that every story has already been told, and the stories that we write are all just drawing on the experiences of people around us or in the past. I like to develop my plot and characters in ways that show my characters' weaknesses and very imperfect sides who can come together and make something beautiful. the story of "ordinary people who made themselves extraordinary"

Q9.How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

A9. If it's just people shitting on my book, I get upset, maybe get into some online discourse, rant to my irl friends (who I've never let read my stories, so they have no idea what I'm talking about), and then get over it. if it's constructive feedback, I get upset, sulk a bit, and try to reflect on my writing. it's hard getting negative comments, but they are inevitable and help me grow at times!

Q10.What advice would you give to a writer working on their first book?

A10. As Nike says, JUST DO IT. your writing gets better, believe me. it's more of a skill than a talent. read more books, emulate the writing styles you enjoy. be daring and try out different things. and for the love of all things, please learn how to use spacing and commas properly
